Call for Papers – “What is Auditory History?”
1st International Conference of the IMS Study Group Auditory History
University of Chicago John W. Boyer Center in Paris, 20–21 March 2026
The IMS Study Group Auditory History invites proposals for its inaugural conference, which asks how scholars might refine the “historical ear” and expand the methodological horizons of sound studies. We welcome contributions that engage with the diversity of listening practices across time and place; interrogate the hearing–listening dichotomy; and integrate multisensorial, global, and critical perspectives into the study of sonic experience.
Key themes include (but are not limited to):
- historical soundscapes, environments, and ecologies
- subjectivity, memory, affect, and sonic imagination
- marginalised auditory perspectives and non-elite sources
- theory and method (acoustemology, sensory history, digital tools)
- sonic heritage, preservation, and museology
- pedagogies of listening
Paper format: 20-minute presentation + 10 minutes discussion.
Submission: 250–300-word abstract + 100-word bio (single PDF) to auditoryhistory -at- musicology.org.
