Alfred University Summer Arts Workshop:
"Listening and Composing with Acoustic Environments"
Session 4, July 17th–22nd

This one-week workshop invites participants to reconsider the act of listening and our relationship with the acoustic environment. Centered on encounters in the ‘field,’ participants will gather sounded and/or visual materials to be rearticulated through a variety of projects: Compositions, podcasts, sound art pieces, etc. These materials will be enriched by readings, discussions, and basic recording/sound production guidance, depending on student interests. The workshop will take place at Alfred University, where nature preserves and the surrounding Finger Lakes of upstate New York will serve as primary field sites. No experience in music, recording, or special equipment necessary, only a desire to listen deeply, reevaluate environmental relationships, and communicate creatively. The week will culminate in an immersive gallery exhibition of participants' projects.
