The Department of Musicology at the Freie Universität Berlin invites applications for a 5-year full-time appointment on New Music at the ranking of Professor. This position is to be filled as soon as possible from October 1, 2023. The Professorship is funded by a generous endowment of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, initially for five years, but with the prospect of extension.
We seek an outstanding scholar/artist who combines a profile on artistic and humanities research in the areas of New and Experimental Music, as well as Sound Art. The salary is decided according to the German Collective Wage Agreement for the Public Sector on the category W3.
The newly created professorship is expected to assume a leading position in the academic discourse and research on Contemporary Music and related artistic practices. The chosen candidate will be responsible for building bridges between the humanities and the arts. He/she/they is/are expected to promote practice-based research and teaching, as well as to work closely with musicians, festival curators, and other artists and performers.
Candidates should have a Doctorate in musicology or comparable subject, research experience, experience in the mediation of New and/or Experimental Music and sound practice.
Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in a multidisciplinary environment that includes disciplines such as musicology, theater, dance, and film studies, as well as cultural and media management. The teaching load is 8 hours per week. Finally, the chosen candidate is expected to be involved in the management of the newly established MA on Music, Sound, Performance, and to participate to a limited extent in the responsibilities of faculty membership.
