The International Centre for Wind Music Research and the Centre for Gender Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) are organising the conference “Gender Relations in Wind Music: from Clichés to Diversity” from 4 to 5 May 2023 at the Institute 12 Oberschützen (Austria).

Is wind music a male domain? The answer seems less obvious today, given the development of wind music. The gender ratio among musicians, in orchestras, among conductors and composers has changed since the middle of the 20th century. The role of women in wind music is increasingly becoming the focus of artistic debate, but it is not yet accompanied by extensive aesthetic and academic reflection. At the same time, questions arise as to the extent to which existing gender relations influence wind music or whether today's international context promotes the processes of change.

This conference is intended to provide a basis and new knowledge for this still little-researched topic, but it should also serve as a stimulus in the individual institutes and organisational units to develop new initiatives independently or in cooperation. Contributions from music, art and media studies as well as gender studies and related disciplines are welcome. Scholars and artists as well as experts working in the field are invited to submit proposals for papers and presentations in German or English.

Possible topics include:
- Wind music, women and gender from a historical, social and cultural perspective
- Gender-specific experiences in wind music
- Discrimination, challenges and stereotypes
- Wind music, gender and diversity
- Wind music, gender and identity
- The role of women in today's artistic and scientific fields
- Changes and transformation processes
Proposals on general themes are particularly welcome, but other aspects will also be considered.

Presentation formats:
- Lecture 30 minutes (+15min discussion)
- Lecture recital 20 minutes (+10 discussion)
- Poster presentation (format A1)

Abstract (max. 300 words) and short biography (max. 150 words incl. contact details) should be sent to david.gasche -at- kug.ac.at. In the case of a lecture recital, additional material (e.g. audio or video files) may be included.
