Georgetown University’s Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a full-time tenure-line Assistant Professor position specializing in Music Theory to begin on August 1, 2023. For the first year of this position, the successful candidate will hold the title of Provost’s Distinguished Faculty Fellow and will have no teaching and service responsibilities during that time. This will allow a focus on research while receiving mentorship and support from two senior faculty members. Following the fellowship year, the candidate will have a 2-2 teaching load, offering courses in foundational music theory in addition to courses in the specific areas of research and/or creative expertise.
We seek a music theory scholar with the facility to engage a diverse set of musical repertoires and methodologies. A fundamental attribute for the successful candidate is to approach the discipline and field as a diverse and global tradition. This requires knowledge not only of the Western European art music tradition but also includes competence in and engagement with global, popular, and indigenous practices. Broadly conceived, specific expertise in American musical practices is preferred, with additional expertise in performance and musicology/ethnomusicology.
The curricular role of music theory is fundamental to the program’s major and minor. It provides students with the tools to learn about, analyze, and comprehend broad perspectives essential to the global, historical, and contemporary study of music and its various forms of practice. Required for majors and minors but open to non-majors, these courses are designed to establish foundations for a range of upper-level classes in musicology, composition, and recording arts.
The Georgetown University Department of Performing Arts has a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, research, performance, and artistic creation at all levels. The music program maintains links to American Studies, African-American Studies, Film and Media Studies, theater, journalism, etc., as well as the Georgetown Humanities Initiative and the Racial Justice Institute.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in hand by August 1, 2023. Expertise in theory and analysis representing a broad array of perspectives.
