For the Graduate Program (MGRK) »Historical, compositional and aesthetical Perspectives on Symphonic Poems« (IKOPS), the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz is awarding a doctoral scholarship in the amount of EUR 1,550 per month. It is to be filled as of 1 October 2024 for a period of three years.

The program employs a cultural-historical perspective on investigating symphonic poems. It analyses the genre from an interdisciplinary standpoint, examining themes, modes of reception, and compositional styles. Further information on the research and study program can be found on the program's website.

The sub-project, entitled »Compositional Theoretical Perspectives on Symphonic Poems«, is seeking an ambitious scholar who is interested in exploring the aesthetic, music-theoretical, and compositional-practical aspects of musical representability and compositional procedures in symphonic poems.

The program is designed for outstanding graduates in the fields of musicology and music theory. The ideal candidate has distinguished themselves through exemplary academic performance, particularly in their qualifying examinations. They have graduated no more than two years prior to the application deadline for our exclusive scholarship program.

To apply please send in the following documents:
• A letter of motivation (1-2 pages) that convincingly explains the reasons for the planned doctorate, your expectations of a mini-graduate program and interdisciplinary work
• Curriculum vitae and degree certificates (university entrance qualification, MA, state examination, transcript of records of all courses taken in the MA program, equivalent foreign degrees)
• List of publications, if applicable
• Language certificates, if applicable
• A project outline (max. 10 pages/30,000 characters incl. spaces) in German or English, which considers the research question, the current state of research, methodological considerations on the profile of the graduate program as well as a work plan and schedule
• A work sample (e. g. Master's thesis) and an abstract (approx. 1 page) of the work sample
• Nomination of two professors who can provide information on personal suitability and academic qualifications
