The Department of Music at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) is pleased to announce a search for a full-time, tenure-track ethnomusicologist, with the estimated start date of August 1, 2024. The UHM Ethnomusicology Program has a long-standing reputation for excellence in the study of world music, especially the musics of Asia and the Pacific. We seek a highly motivated individual with a commitment to excellence in teaching and a strong research agenda. Applicants should be prepared to participate in developing and implementing curricular and programmatic revisions in collaboration with current faculty and to build ties with colleagues in related disciplines and with the wider community.
Minimum Qualifications:
Earned Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology or a related field (such as Musicology, Anthropology, or Area Studies) with an Ethnomusicology focus (ABDs will be considered, but all requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed by August 2024);
Evidence of college-level teaching experience on music and culture;
Record of research (such as conference presentations, and scholarly publications);
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
Desirable Qualifications:
1. Theoretical specialization in one or more of the following: Intercultural Musical Activity; Music and Indigeneity; Music and Gender; Music and Cultural Politics; Popular Music, Media, and Society; Music’s Relation to Dance and Theater;
2. Demonstrated experience in performance;
3. Ability to teach a music ensemble;
4. Commitment to academic program development;
5. Research focus on one or more of the cultures of Hawaii, the Pacific, or East Asia;
6. Demonstrated ability to support the university’s mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
7. Demonstrated experience in local community engagement.
