Dear AMS Members,
Following a special issue of Women and Music: A Journal of Gender and Culture (2022) on “Music, Sound and Maternity,” there is a growing interest in the topic of sound, gender and maternity. As music scholars who are invested in fostering a community and network of scholars working on all aspects of music, sound and maternity, broadly defined - from soundscapes of birth to musical representations of maternity to socio-sonic histories of maternal sound - we are pleased to announce the start of a Music, Sound and Maternity Reading Group.
This reading group, which will meet via zoom 3 times a year, and which is convened by scholars working in the UK and the USA, will be a platform for building networks and discussing future directions in music, sound and maternity research. For the first session, we will read 1) the Introduction to the Women and Music special issue (2022), and selected sections of Adrienne Rich’s "Of Women Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution" (1986).
If you would like to be part of the reading group, please email e.johnson-williams -at- soton.ac.uk by 14 October 2023. We will then send out a doodle poll to all interested participants to find a time in October that can accommodate the most people.
We look forward to our discussions!
Erin Johnson-Williams (University of Southampton)
Karen Leistra-Jones (Franklin and Marshall College)
Michelle Meinhart (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance)
