2021 Midwest PCA/ACA Conference
Pop Divas
CALL FOR PAPERS, ABSTRACTS, AND PANEL PROPOSALS
Deadline for submission proposals: April 30, 2021
Midwest Popular Culture Association/Midwest American Culture Association Annual Conference
Friday-Sunday, 7-10 October 2021
Westin Minneapolis
88 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55402
The Pop Divas area of the Midwest Popular Culture Association/Midwest American Culture Association is now accepting proposals for its 2021 conference in Minneapolis, MN. We are looking for papers that examine any aspect of the pop diva. Although traditionally defined as “a famous female singer of popular music” or a “self-important person who is temperamental and difficult to please,” we are seeking papers and proposals that stretch and reimagine this definition and position the term as inclusive and gender non-specific. Potential topics for paper or panel proposals include but are not limited to:
• How does the diva function in popular culture
• Intersections of gender, sexuality, and race in pop music
• Sexualization/liberation/empowerment
• Divas and politics
• An exploration of themes in a diva’s lyrics, outfits, or performances
Please submit a paper abstract of 250-300 words or a panel proposal including short abstracts and titles of each prospective paper to the "Pop Divas" area on the MPCA/ACA Submission website. We strongly encourage pre-constituted panel submissions.
Please include your name, affiliation, and e-mail address of each author/participant. A preliminary version of the schedule will be posted on our website around August 2021. The final version will be distributed in hard copy at the conference.
