Dear Colleagues,

This year’s 87th Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society will not be held in Chicago, Illinois, as planned. Instead, the 2021 AMS Annual Meeting will be held online on 11–12 and 20–21 November 2021. In turn, the Chicago meeting will be postponed to 2024, taking the place of the online meeting previously scheduled for that year.

This change will, I know, be disappointing for many. However, after extensive cost modeling we have concluded that it would not be wise to hold an in-person meeting. The uncertainty and financial risks posed by the lingering COVID-19 pandemic are simply too great, explained in detail by Danielle Fosler-Lussier, AMS vice-president and chair of CAM (https://www.amsmusicology.org/news/561221/2021-AMS-Annual-Meeting-To-Be-Held-Online-.htm). So, we are adjusting plans and making the most of a challenging situation.

As part of our effort to make lemonade, we have changed the meeting dates to make the event more accessible. We are experimenting with a new conference platform to reduce load times. We are organizing more professional development and networking sessions to provide greater career support for all attendees. And we are making this announcement as early as possible, so that everyone will know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

Thank you for your patience and continuing support. I look forward to welcoming you to this fall’s 87th Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society.

Warmest wishes,
Siovahn
