THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WOMEN'S WORK IN MUSIC will be held at Trinity Laban in London on 29-31 August 2025. The conference will take place mainly in person but there will also be some (limited) opportunities for those unable to join in person to give online presentations.

We invite researchers and practitioners to submit proposals that engage with a range of perspectives on women’s work in music, whether these be from an academic, practice-based or educational viewpoint. Topics are encouraged on any musical genre, period or practice which may address, but need not be limited to, the following:
  •     Composition and/or Performance in and beyond the Western and Eastern traditions – historical, contemporary and future.
  •     Women and Music Technology.
  •     Women as Conductors.
  •     Women in Popular Music and/or Film Music.
  •     Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Ethnography.
  •     Music Analysis and Theory.
  •     Feminism, Gender and the Canon.
  •     Women in the Music Industries: Management, Agency and Administration.
  •     Women and Music Education (all levels).
  •     LGBTQ+ Perspectives.
  •     Women and Activism in Music.
  •     Women, Music and Disability.
  •     Women in Music and Climate Change.
  •     The Representation of Women Making Music.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

– Individual Proposals:  Proposals for papers should be sent as abstracts of not more than 200 words. Individual papers should be 20 minutes in length and will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion.

– Lecture-Recitals:  Proposals for lecture-recitals should be sent as abstracts of not more than 250 words. Recitals should be 45 minutes in length and will be followed by discussion.

– Panel Proposals:  Proposals for organised panels of 4 speakers (2 hours) should submit a panel abstract (200 words) and individual abstracts (200 words each) in a single document together with the full names and email addresses of the participants.

DATES & DEADLINES

Please send your proposal as a Word document to wwm5trinitylaban -at- gmail.com no later than 12 May 2025, together with your name, affiliation and contact details, audio- visual requirements and a brief biography (150 words max.). Please also indicate whether you will be attending the conference in-person or online.  

The Conference Committee will make its final decision on the abstracts by 2 June 2025, and contributors will be informed immediately thereafter. Further information about the programme and registration will be posted in due course.
