The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for the James R. ’58 and Susan Neumann Postdoctoral Fellowship in Jazz History beginning with the 2022–23 academic year. This is a full-time, non- continuing, two-year, non-renewable, faculty position in Jazz Studies and Musicology. The fellowship is for scholars who have completed their doctorate within the past five years, or who are ABD and expect to complete their terminal degree by the end of the first year of the fellowship, to pursue research, publication, and teaching on topics in jazz history through use of the James R. and Susan Neumann Jazz Collection and other special collections at Oberlin College & Conservatory.

The primary duties during the fellowship years include: teaching at least two courses per year on specialized topics in jazz history, drawing extensively on materials from the Neumann Collection; pursuing an active research program (e.g., publications, conference presentations, and more), utilizing materials from the Neumann Collection and other holdings at Oberlin; participating actively in the intellectual and creative life of Oberlin College and Conservatory; and, in keeping with Oberlin’s dedication to undergraduate teaching and learning, involve students in the research process by modeling appropriate methods in special-collection use, and support students and faculty interested in utilizing materials from the Neumann Collection.

Candidates are expected to hold a terminal degree in fields such as musicology, ethnomusicology, history, sociology, or area studies, with primary scholarly interest in jazz history. Candidates who have completed the Ph.D., DMA or similar terminal degree less than five years before the start date of the fellowship, or who will have completed the Ph.D. or other terminal degree by the end of the first year of the fellowship, are welcome to apply.

Oberlin College offers a competitive compensation package with excellent benefits.

Review of applications will begin on Friday, April 15, 2022. Those received after April 15th may be considered until the position is filled.
