Hi All

Can anyone identify this prelude of a jazz standard? Both melody and harmony are written in movable solfa . Some syllables , re , mi , fa , so(l) la are internationally known. To avoid confusion between do and the Transatlantic note D the initial of the older name ut is used, though it can still be sung as do. The initial  t stands for tsi which combines the Mediterranian si with the Transatlantic ti, and can be sung either way.

The harmonies use a lot of jazz shorthands which are explained below the extract.

The triangle is short for maj7 .
The minus sign is short for minor.
The note to the right of a slash is a single note to be played in the bass.

With best wishes to all members,

Bob

hi John

afdilt -the initials of A Foggy Day in London Town - is the correct answer!  As the coal fires of winter have been banned in London we don't get the fogs like in the old days, for which I breath a sigh of nostalgia, but at least I can breath.

re the prounciation of the vw xyz
va, wu, yu as normal English pronunciation

xe with the ch of the Scottish loch
ze as "they" using the Castilian Spanish pronunciation of z

These pronunciation provide contrasts contrast with neighbouring solfa syllables within the distance of 3 guitar frets.

While ireal Pro looks after the chords of the main body of jazz standards they avoid the giving the melody for fear of  court battles. Singers often want begin with the preludes and that really needs the melody so that accompanists can follow the singer, colla voce, and give the singer pitch cues if necessary. They may not want to sing it in the written key. It might be useful to have all the most sought after verses in movable chromatic solfa if enough accompanists can get their heads.
round it.

More quizzes to follow.

Bob

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the fun quiz. It's good to see this example of your notation system.
Best wishes,
