Hello,

It's been a while since I've posted here, hope you guys will forgive
the slightly off topic posting (it is about making music simpler
though :)

About three years ago a WholeTone Revolution came up on Ebay for
£500.00 (plus shipping from Japan). It is one of the old red ones (not
the newer white one). It's got a Korg N1 sound module on it. It's
basically a modern day janko Keyboard.

So I've got one and ..... got to say it's ace but I've never really
gotten comfy with it (I find that my hands become too cramped when I'm
playing it). I've decided to sell it and try chromatic accordions
(saving up for a midi one).

I've painted the keys so that I knew what was where (I couldn't get
the hang of doing it spatially when they were all the same colour). So
it's looks a bit bizarre, but it's 100% working (I got the adapter
converted to UK A.C current when I received it).

I've added a wee picture to Photo Bucket
http://s988.photobucket.com/albums/af5/theboyblunder/

I would set the reserve price at £200.00 once I got over that I would
let it go.

Apologies if no one interested, wanted to sound out before bunged it
on Ebay (oh yeah, would ship worldwide (I'm in Glasgow, Scotland, UK)

All the best
Mark

There are some specifications here:
http://www.chromatic-keyboard.com/english/

According to the specs, it has velocity and aftertouch sensitivity,
which is good, but they don't say whether each of those is per-key
(best) or just one value for the entire keyboard. I assume the velocity
would be per-key, anyway.

It has MIDI out, so you're not limited to the built-in sounds. Are the
duplicated keys sent on distinct MIDI channels, so that you could (for
example) play a tremolo on two keys of the same pitch without having a
note-off from one key terminate the sound of the other?

Hey Doug,

No you cant play tremelo on the same key the three rows of keys are
all connected i.e. you play a c on the first row and the third and
fith rows are all depressed, it's all on the same channel.

Hope that answer is of some use to you.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,

Oh, so it has physically connected keys, just like on the original Janko
pianos. Seems a bit quaint in this century. I'm not sure what
advantage that approach has. Anyway, it's great that someone actually
brought a Janko-like keyboard to market.

You did the right thing by painting the keys! I don't know what that
company was thinking when they decided on all-white keys. "Let's make as
disorienting an interface as possible, and see who buys it"? Maybe they
figured if people can learn their way around a violin fingerboard,
there's no need to patronize them by showing them which key is which...

http://www.chromatic-keyboard.com/english/ says "The Best Seller
Synthesizer in Japan," which seems a bit too good to be true.

The company, in its various manifestations, is briefly discussed, along
with a lot of other historical info and photos of Janko-style keyboards,
here:

Hi, Mark.
Do you say your Wholetone has painted keys (spray painted I guess) and you're selling it for £200?
God, if I get my sallary soon I'll buy it from you! Still do not have the money though...
I am in Bulgaria btw.

Of course, Mark.
Thank you for your reply. I couldn't read what is broken with it or you just want to get rid of it?
I thought that you've painted the keys not that it came with them as stock-in.
As soon as I get the money I will take it. :)
Keep you in touch. I would like to try that thing.

Hello!

I know it's been almost four years but did this keyboard find a new home?

You'll be sure to get at least one bid, but I don't see it there yet.

So was that a yes or a no? I ask because I've been trying to chase one down for a great long while and the Janko system keyboards are the best ones that work with my mind!
If that's a no would anybody know where I could find a good clean used one?

Mr. Wataru Okawa is selling some on discount but the tricky part is
that they are in Japan.
So the transport is not cheap at all. You can buy some new Wholetone
or Chromateone form here:

http://chromatone.jp/outlet/

It has enough info in English so hope the japanese glyphs do not give
you a weird face. :)
If I had the money i would purchase one right away. Even the
discounted price is too high for me.

And yes, Mark was kind enough to tell me that his Wholetone found a new home.
I was too late to see the auction on the ebay. I tried to investigate
who bought it but with no success. The keyboard would have helped me a
lot to my own keyboard design project... but anyway, hope see some day
the instrument on ebay (if not bought by a collectioner or someone
like that who will never sell it).

Hi everybody!

I've managed to get a Wholetone Revolution on order from Japan and was wondering if anybody knew exactly what I would need to convert the power row japan to US off the top of their heads?

I don’t know about the Revolution, but the Chromatone comes with a 110-120 v transformer that works on US current.
According to this website: http://chromatone.jp/faq/en.html#50
the revolution uses 110 vAC to 9V DC, which is US voltage.

IF it doesn’t come with one, you should be able to find a 110VAC to 9VDC converter at most stores that sell electronic devices. Just make sure it has a plug with the right size and polarity to match your instrument.

Hey, Steve
If you find the Wholetone Revo. instrument not pleasant or uncomfortable to you (after some time) and if you will be willing to sell it as a second hand, please, contact me. I live in UK though, not in the US.
Just if... thanks!

Thank, you guys
Not much time in the evenings but this weekend I will start the "reverse engineering" process.
There is a lot to consider before trying to make a redesign. It will have the "pivot" triggering... which is bad in my opinion but i have to make it laki that for now.
Maybe 100% of the electro-mechanical keyboards are like that. I think Paul Vandervoort's Daskin has a different approach using "vertical sliding" which is better (or best).
Chromatone (Wholetone) sticks to the old-school way of triggering the keyboard's keys.
I have to make a suitable redesign of the leys for that Wholetone. I wish one day I could release my ideas as a touch-surface device similar to Roli's Seaboard.
Anyway, I have to do the hard work now: measuring seven times, cutting only once!

Long live 3D printing!!!
