Greetings all,

Well, I finally got around to tackling how to notate quarter tones in Clairnote, via a (somewhat) new system of quarter tone accidental signs. Here's my blog post with more details about it for anyone curious.

Beyond just Clairnote, it seems like a viable approach for how these kinds of accidental signs could work on chromatic staff notation systems more generally.

Disclaimer: I am far from an expert in microtonal music but from what I know this would be the first steps that cover some of the basics. I'd be curious to hear any thoughts or feedback from those who have more experience and expertise in this area.

All the best,
Paul Morris

Hi Paul,

Good work, as usual! I like how I can click on the SN -> DN link at the bottom of your web pages and see (for example) the new quarter-tone accidentals in DN, not just in SN. I'm still partial to DN, but I can't claim substantial experience with either of those two Clairnote variants.

Supporting quarter-tones is a sensible and important first step. There are some microtonal enthusiasts who shudder at 24-ET (the division of the octave into 24 equal parts), because they are devoted to other microtonal scales such as ones using just intonation. But quarter-tone (and three-quarter-tone) sharps and flats are the most common accidental signs in general use, so they're a logical first foray into microtonal notation.

Best,
Doug

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your message! It's good to know I'm on the right track with these first steps into microtonal notation.

And yes, Clairnote DN is still there on the Clairnote website for those who prefer it, you just have to click that "SN -> DN" link in the footer (as you wrote). DN is still fully supported; SN just comes first in terms of presentation.

Best,
Paul
