Sent this little update to NRCS and posted it around fb w a few pics hope all cool w you kids thank you xox

Gentlemen hope things are not too weird or stressful over there. Just reporting in. Gus has been feeding us exceptional plants of great diversity which we have been installing since early March though we could have planted straight through for all winter seemed to care. Conditions have been perfect. Also got in a couple thou of starts from resiliency people— nice diversity there also. Also the shaded fuelbreak came through again I trained em how we do it and you will be very pleased! Super clean. I still have a few hundred now 3yo starts from Gus but they should be all in by another week or two.

Although we will have doubled our commitment of plants in the ground (thx to Edison, intmtn, resiliency and of course you guys), Gus is still growing up some of our seeds and expects to have some very special additions in fall and spring. He’s real glad to be “branching out” beyond what my daughter calls pines in lines…

We’re getting super good coverage across the place w caged and uncaged (we learned from ray to sprinkle the little uncaged plugs w cayenne!) and in so doing finding many young surviving forests from our now 6 yrs of rehab… all ages sizes and varieties quite encouraging despite actual attrition  reality. Many are going insane.

Spkg of attrition most of the caged sugars from last year cooked. Having invested installing them we are refilling them all w variety of 3yo during these great conditions and obviously hope springs infernal. And meanwhile the forest and I thank you so much always great working w all a you guys.

Trivia item: we bought a set of three auger bits for cordless drill. Small size perfect dibble substitute. Medium size bit perfect for 10” plants! With 1
2” extension perfect for replanting our existing baskets. Way easier in the bod.
You heard it here. Be well friends

Cayenne chili cook off just in time for Flag Day? Can't wait to see it all live 6/13-14.

Thanks for the barky update. Truly amazing work & transformation🎉. About Oak sprouts, I heard Douglas Tallamy talking on the radio. He said if you cut back an oak trunk  to limit height and let the sprouts grow you will get an oak bush but it will not make acorns

Interesting, Debby Jo! If that is universally true of oaks, I wonder if I can use it to tell which of the oaks (far bigger than what I’d call bushes) in Golden Gate Park were cut. The story goes: When 1906 quake refugees lived in the park, they cut the oaks down for firewood and what grows now is mostly stump sprouts from that.

I haven’t spent enough time tracking how acorns are on the trees is that woodland, but I will now!
