SFU’s School of Interactive Arts is currently seeking candidates for a tenure-track assistant professor of Human-Centred Computing. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the innovative research taking place alongside the Metacreation Lab at SFU!
Applicants should have a PhD in Computer Science with a history of computing-intensive research and teaching encompassing both theory and practice. Individuals from marginalized communities, including but not limited to, women and BIPOC, are encouraged to apply. |

The Future of Music - presented by Cambridge Wireless Ltd & The Future Devices & Technologies Group

Philippe Pasquier will be speaking among a group of academics and industry experts at a hybrid online & in-person event hosted by Cambridge Wireless Ltd's Future Devices and Technologies SIG. Titled The Future of Music, this event will explore the state of the art in sound analysis and synthesis, music generation and multi-channel sound presentation.
The program encompasses perspectives including Dolby Labs’ VP of Tech Incubation speaking on the Evolution of Immersive Music, and Anglia Ruskin University’s Douglas Nunn on Audio analysis, synthesis and digital instruments, among others.
Starting at 4pm GMT (8 am PST), Philippe Pasquier's talk wil reflect on the broad impact that generative systems will have on the future of music.

Autolume Acedia Launches at Light Up Kelowna

A new multi-disciplinary visual arts projection by Metacreation Lab members Jonas Kaarsch and Philippe Pasquier has launched in downtown Kelowna’s Cultural District. Titled Autolume Acedia, it is part of the digital urban screen series Light Up Kelowna.
A product of the latest Creative AI and Deep Learning algorithms from the Metacreation Lab at Simon Fraser University, Autolume Acedia is a hallucinatory meditation on the ancient emotion called acedia. Acedia describes a mixture of contemplative apathy, nervous nostalgia, and paralyzed angst. Greek monks first described this emotion two millennia ago, and it captures the paradoxical state of being simultaneously bored and anxious.
While music plays, the Autolume, a video generation system that automates live music visualization, dreams about bodies, organs, and bones, synthesizing abstract visuals dancing responsively to the sounds.
The projections are free to view and will be shown on the exterior of the Rotary Centre for the Arts (421 Cawston Ave.) from 6:00 pm to 12:30 am for the month of February. |

Last week Philippe Pasquier participated in a panel discussion hosted by Vancouver’s Alliance Francaise investigating the future of the digital arts and the potential role NFTs can play in it. The discussion also featured Dorothy Woodend (Culture Editor at The Tyee), Jesse McKee (Head of Strategy at 221A), and Rhea Myers (an artist, hacker, and writer).

Call for Submissions: 3rd Conference on AI Music Creativity AIMC 2022

The 3rd Conference on AI Music Creativity integrates two overlapping research forums: The Computer Simulation of Music Creativity Conference (est. 2016) and The International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (est. 2012). The objective of the conference is to bring together scholars and artists interested in the emulation and extension of musical creativity through computational means and to provide them with an interdisciplinary platform in which to present and discuss their work in scientific and artistic contexts.
The call for submissions is currently open until April 22, 2022 and accepting submissions in either Research Paper, Music Work, or Workshop & Tutorial categories. Have a glance at some of the many suggested topics for this year below, or learn more about the progrem on the AIMC website. |
