Dear all,

Seoul National University (http://www.useoul.edu/) invites applicants for Graduate Studies in Composition at the College of Music. Applications completed by 7 March will receive full attention for the September intake, the start of the second semester of the 2019 academic year at SNU.

The Department of Composition (http://music.snu.ac.kr/en/node/65) offers postgraduate degrees in Master of Music (MMus) and Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA). Faculty supervisors in composition include Uzong Choe (Head), Sangjick Jun (Dean), Gyoodong Kim, Donoung Lee, Shinuh Lee, Youngsun Kim, PerMagnus Lindborg, and Jeongeun Soe (http://music.snu.ac.kr/en/node/75). Co-supervision can be arranged with faculty in a performance discipline at the College of Music, or in an interdisciplinary subject across the University.

We currently have 16 graduate students and 63 undergraduates at the Department, majoring in Composition or Theory. Advanced students have access to several facilities, including:
Electronic Music Lab, with Mac computers, quadraphony, various interfaces, software including Max, Logic, and Finale;
Center for Arts & Technologies, hosting a lab and a surround sound post-production studio equipped with Mac computer and various software including Pro Tools;
College of Music Concert Hall, a 200-seat space for acoustic and electroacoustic performance, and live recording;
as well as support for concerts and other productions, travel, and publications.

MMus students complete 26 credits of graduate courses and a creative portfolio, typically within 2 years. DMA students complete 48 credits of graduate courses, a creative portfolio, and a written thesis, typically within 4 years after their Master’s degree.

SNU is consistently ranked among top universities in Asia, and the College of Music is the center of music education and research in Korea. It was founded in 1945 and has developed to include every facet of music (http://music.snu.ac.kr/). Our lush and friendly Campus is surrounded on three sides by hilly green areas, and on the fourth by easy access to the megacity of Seoul.

The University offers generous funding schemes for graduate studies both for Korean citizens and international students. For details see http://www.useoul.edu/apply/graduate/scholarships/before-application and http://www.useoul.edu/students/housing.

We invite qualified individuals to make an informal inquiry by contacting a prospective supervisor via email, briefly indicating their background, specialisation, and research interest. If supported, international application via SNU website and submission of documents are due by 7 March 2019. Notification is expected in early June. For details see http://www.useoul.edu/apply/graduate/timeline.
