Technoscientific practices in music emphasise the importance of the use of technology and scientific methods in the creation, production, and analysis of music. In addition to technical and scientific considerations, technoscientific approaches to music also take into account the social and cultural conditions that influence the development, implementation, and use of music technology, which result in a wide range of research that looks at the desirable outcome of human technology relationship / interaction and how it can be used to create more meaningful and impactful music experiences.

Given the complex and ever-evolving nature of the music technology research field, it is vital that music practitioners are able to recognise both the technical and cultural aspects with the knowledge and understanding to navigate and address various ethical, economic, social, and environmental implications that arise with the use of technology in music today. In doing so, practitioners can ensure that the technology is ethically sound, that it fosters inclusive and equitable human connections, and that it has a positive impact on the environment. In line with this vision, the primary objective of this special journal issue is to explore a range of critical approaches within the realm of technoscientific practices in music. Our focus lies in prioritising and elevating the importance of accessibility, sustainability, human and non-human interaction, the requirements and viewpoints of musical communities and the general public, as well as ethical considerations.

We invite submissions that deepen and broaden the ongoing interest in the development and practices of music technologies that support and empower people, promote artistic expression, and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive musical culture. The compilation of articles in this special issue grows out from questions, concerns, and topics that emerged during the open-public symposium held on November 11, 2022, in Helsinki (http://dmi.aalto.fi/symposium22/).

Topics of interest of the special issue include, but are not limited to:

• Technology as musical cultural production
• Musical publics - new perspectives of music communities
• Human-machine agency in music productions
• Rematerialising music performances
• Bias and generality in music applications
• Cultural practices for sustainable music technologies
• Human and material intentionality in digital musical instruments
• Mutual incorporation - humans, agents and technologies
• Reconceptualising data as an interface
• Accessibility and cultural evolution in music practice
• Listening strategies in machine vs human music
• Environmental impact of technology for music

Manuscripts:

• Prepare your manuscript following the JNMR's standard formatting guidelines.
• Manuscripts should be between 6,000 and 9,000 words, including references, tables, and figures.

• Submit your manuscript electronically through the journal's online submission system, ScholarOne Manuscripts.
• When submitting your paper, please select the "special issue" category to ensure it is considered for this Special Issue.

Peer Review Process:

• All submitted manuscripts will undergo a peer-review process.
• Peer review will take place between June and August 2024, and authors will receive feedback and decisions during this period.
