You are cordially invited to the opening events of EPFL Pavilions’ new exhibition, Musica ex Machina: Machines Thinking Musically, on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 September at EPFL, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne.

19 September, 5 pm–9 pm
Exhibition opening with guided tours, speeches, cocktail and live coding set

20 September, 9 am–5 pm
Symposium with the artists and researchers of the exhibition

20 September, 7:30 pm– 9:30 pm
Opening concert with Magda Mayas and Jennifer Walshe

Musica ex Machina: Machines Thinking Musically
Exhibition opening

From Medieval theory to modern AI, Musica ex Machina: Machines Thinking Musically explores the history of computational and algorithmic thought in music, showcasing how technological advances and human creativity have continuously expanded the boundaries of musical expression. Through historical objects, artworks, and immersive installations, the exhibition presents the works of past and present visionaries while looking ahead to the future of music.

— Alloys of art and science

The Musica ex Machina Symposium, held in conjunction with the exhibition, delves into the interplay between music and computational thinking from historical to contemporary contexts. This event will gather experts to discuss how algorithmic and AI-driven approaches have transformed music creation and performance. Through a series of presentations and discussions, participants will explore the profound implications of these technological advancements on the future of music.

For the first concert given in the framework of the Musica ex Machina exhibition, Berlin based pianist and composer Magda Mayas and Irish composer and vocalist Jennifer Walshe will perform at EPFL.
