 Travelling for performances and other engagements overseas is extremely taxing. From the packing (23kg weight limit is directly aimed at torturing Indian dancers!) to pulling the luggage across endless airport corridors or train stations, loading into hotel rooms and green rooms, getting dressed and later, packing up – it can feel both exhausting and lonely. I have been in so many green rooms in glamorous cities staring into the mirror asking myself, “What am I doing here?” Sometimes one gets lucky, like I did last month in Washington DC. The young assistants assigned to me actually KNEW what they were doing. Daniel Singh’s 11th annual DAKSHINA Fall festival was a medley of various performances mounted over a 3 day weekend at the beautiful Shakespeare Theatre Company auditorium at Harmon Hall. Apart from the central location of the festival venue, the beautiful space came equipped with large green rooms and a dedicated wardrobe mistress who patiently ironed out the zillion pleats of my blue silk costume (all the time muttering under her breath, “I hate pleats!”). Fruits, snacks, tea, coffee were all laid out and volunteers cheerfully ran up and down bringing us safety pins, hair spray, gel and whatever. With the quick changes needed for my SPIRALS show, my two ultra smart dancers turned assistants, Kasi Aysola and Madhavi, set up a mini change station just off stage and helped me with meticulous and practiced perfection. Such a huge relief! Adding to the bonus was 23 year old Aysola, a professional MAC makeup artiste, who created a flawless finish to my face. I just walked out of the theatre and into the after party at a hip bookstore/bistro wearing the false eyelashes with aplomb!
Eleven years of sustained hard work to build a community of dance lovers in Obama land is not a mean feat. Daniel Singh has worked in relative isolation with several challenges thrown his way. New presenters with deep pockets who came along much later also brought the usual diaspora mentality of Divide and Rule. The Indian community has taken its own time to welcome Daniel into their fold and while the links still remain tenuous, his silent struggle is finally getting noticed. Uncomfortable with loud PR and social media blitzkriegs, Daniel’s 11th edition of the Dakshina Festival drew good but not houseful crowds. However, the bonus for an artiste like me was to have the opportunity to watch the performances of colleagues like Ananda Shankar Jayant and Ramaa Bharadvaj. Senior gurus like the Dhananjayans were also seen in intense and patient rehearsals with their students and the supreme professionalism of Daniel’s team was evident in every aspect of the festival.

There is also an issue of entertainment value. If I go out for an evening, I want to have a fine dinner with good friends and see a great show to talk about over drinks later. As one disgruntled audience member said while walking out of a show with me, “Too many dance performances are just dancer masturbation and far from entertaining. It can have intellectual value, but I still need to be entertained and engaged at some level. Most dance companies here don’t seem to understand that.”
Newspapers and new media outlets must commit to providing as much back story for the arts as readers and audiences need. Newspapers need to provide more assets to their print publications, such as links to video and more photos. New media needs to refine its content, using writers with institutional memory, knowledge of the field, and good research skills, who can contextualize and chronicle as well as critique. A disconnect remains between the old school newspaper critics and the new school online writers and bloggers that does breed contempt for each other; instead, though, we need to be reconnected. In short, we need to create a symbiosis between experts who can provide experience and meaningful content and Internet experts who can provide exciting frameworks and delivery systems for it.
Proving my point about readers being part of the problem, Weisz told me, “The delivery system is there but people are reading less amongst the younger generations, and the older ones still do not use the internet as their primary news source. Our picture stories get five times the viewing over a text based article.”
So what we now have is a shotgun wedding between traditional arts journalism and the many new models offered through new technologies. Can we make this marriage work? We better keep trying, if only for the sake of the children.

Nov 25, 2014, the TV news channels first gave the news - Sitara Devi no more. It made national news because she was a firebrand, diehard dancer with spunk and substance.
Obit / Tribute - Kathak exponent Sitara Devi (born on 8 Nov 1920) passed away in the early hours of November 25, 2014 at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai. She was 94. She combined the elements of two schools of Kathak, which had developed in Banaras and Lucknow. She represented a lost age when Kathak used to be performed for the whole night. Rabindranath Tagore described her as Nritya Samragini, meaning the empress of dance, after watching her performance when she was just 16 years old. Sitara Devi was a recipient of prestigious awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri and Kalidas Samman.
 - Actor, director, choreographer, writer and composer Veenapani Chawla, passed away around 11am on November 30, 2014 at a hospital in Pondicherry. She was 67. In 1981, she founded the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research in Pondicherry to promote research into the creation of new performance methodologies. She was one of the pioneers of experimental theatre in contemporary India. Trained in Mayurbhanj Chhau, Kalaripayattu, Koodiyattam and Dhrupad singing, she has received the Zee Astiva Award (2006) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puruskar (2010). The Theatre of Veenapani Chawla: Theory, Practice, and Performance edited by Shanta Gokhale offers insights into the artist's creative process and her oeuvre.

The folk art of Hungary is passed on faithfully from one generation to another in music, dance, crafts, and costume. Works of master craftsmen and women will be showcased ranging from wood carvings to egg painting, embroideries, handlooms, potteries, and folk costumes.

December 7 Sunday 7 pm | CHRISTMAS CONCERT  By Péter Szűcs (clarinet) and Péter Kiss (piano)
Péter Szűcs (clarinet) is a graduate from Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music and is currently a part of the doctoral (DLA) program at the Academy. The most important influences in the development of the young artist came with the association and lectures of various eminent musicians. He has been a prize-winner at several international competitions. Besides playing compositions of classicism and romanticism, he has a special interest in the music of 20th and 21st century. As a chamber musician, he frequently collaborates with many well known Hungarian ensembles and orchestras.
Péter Kiss (piano) began to play piano at the age of 9 and is a doctoral student at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. He won several prizes at national and international competitions. He has toured in several European countries and in the USA and as a chamber musician, he has been a part of various music festivals and summer courses. He got his first CD made in 2007. He is committed for contemporary music and made several world and national premieres, followed by radio recordings. He has also worked several times with UMZE Ensemble. He is also a member of Trio Inception and Ludium Ensemble and is primarily focused on the works of György Kurtág.
They were recently on a tour to Europe and gave contemporary music concerts in Paris, London, Rome, Helsinki, Warsaw, Tallin, Bucharest and Bratislava. |

This American-Hungarian co-production, based on Ferenc Molnár's world famous novel, a classic 'A Pál utcai fiúk', takes place in the early 1900s in Budapest and tells the story of two rival gangs of young boys who lay their claim to a vacant lot. The hostilities escalate yet never quite boil over into actual violence. Just when things get out of hand, however, the problem is “solved” by the municipal authority, which takes over the lot for future development.

Delhi has been known as a city of monuments and yet what most people miss out on, are its unique roads, lanes, gardens and memorial buildings, which have a history of their own. The walk and talk will explore the Hungarian Centre’s building, its rich legacy, some of the lanes around it, and will end with a visit to the Gandhi Smriti (Tees January Marg), leading to a moment of silence in these chaotic times. Come and be part of this experience with an open mind!
Robinson, an alumnus of St. Stephen's College, Delhi is a Theologian, Meditation Practitioner, Poet, Art Critic and Curator of Heritage Walks, primarily based in Delhi. He describes himself as a traveler in life, who intends to journey well. |

Travelling for performances and other engagements overseas is extremely taxing. From the packing (23kg weight limit is directly aimed at torturing Indian dancers!) to pulling the luggage across endless airport corridors or train stations, loading into hotel rooms and green rooms, getting dressed and later, packing up – it can feel both exhausting and lonely. I have been in so many green rooms in glamorous cities staring into the mirror asking myself, “What am I doing here?” Sometimes one gets lucky, like I did last month in Washington DC. The young assistants assigned to me actually KNEW what they were doing. Daniel Singh’s 11th annual DAKSHINA Fall festival was a medley of various performances mounted over a 3 day weekend at the beautiful Shakespeare Theatre Company auditorium at Harmon Hall. Apart from the central location of the festival venue, the beautiful space came equipped with large green rooms and a dedicated wardrobe mistress who patiently ironed out the zillion pleats of my blue silk costume (all the time muttering under her breath, “I hate pleats!”). Fruits, snacks, tea, coffee were all laid out and volunteers cheerfully ran up and down bringing us safety pins, hair spray, gel and whatever. With the quick changes needed for my SPIRALS show, my two ultra smart dancers turned assistants, Kasi Aysola and Madhavi, set up a mini change station just off stage and helped me with meticulous and practiced perfection. Such a huge relief! Adding to the bonus was 23 year old Aysola, a professional MAC makeup artiste, who created a flawless finish to my face. I just walked out of the theatre and into the after party at a hip bookstore/bistro wearing the false eyelashes with aplomb!
Eleven years of sustained hard work to build a community of dance lovers in Obama land is not a mean feat. Daniel Singh has worked in relative isolation with several challenges thrown his way. New presenters with deep pockets who came along much later also brought the usual diaspora mentality of Divide and Rule. The Indian community has taken its own time to welcome Daniel into their fold and while the links still remain tenuous, his silent struggle is finally getting noticed. Uncomfortable with loud PR and social media blitzkriegs, Daniel’s 11th edition of the Dakshina Festival drew good but not houseful crowds. However, the bonus for an artiste like me was to have the opportunity to watch the performances of colleagues like Ananda Shankar Jayant and Ramaa Bharadvaj. Senior gurus like the Dhananjayans were also seen in intense and patient rehearsals with their students and the supreme professionalism of Daniel’s team was evident in every aspect of the festival.

There is tremendous internal knowledge about dance, but it is kept hidden. Why do people get so excited about seeing hip-hop dance, say, as in Rennie Harris’s work? Here, rather than familiarity breeding contempt, it breeds a comfort level – something audiences, especially, value.
There is also an issue of entertainment value. If I go out for an evening, I want to have a fine dinner with good friends and see a great show to talk about over drinks later. As one disgruntled audience member said while walking out of a show with me, “Too many dance performances are just dancer masturbation and far from entertaining. It can have intellectual value, but I still need to be entertained and engaged at some level. Most dance companies here don’t seem to understand that.”
Newspapers and new media outlets must commit to providing as much back story for the arts as readers and audiences need. Newspapers need to provide more assets to their print publications, such as links to video and more photos. New media needs to refine its content, using writers with institutional memory, knowledge of the field, and good research skills, who can contextualize and chronicle as well as critique. A disconnect remains between the old school newspaper critics and the new school online writers and bloggers that does breed contempt for each other; instead, though, we need to be reconnected. In short, we need to create a symbiosis between experts who can provide experience and meaningful content and Internet experts who can provide exciting frameworks and delivery systems for it.
Proving my point about readers being part of the problem, Weisz told me, “The delivery system is there but people are reading less amongst the younger generations, and the older ones still do not use the internet as their primary news source. Our picture stories get five times the viewing over a text based article.”
So what we now have is a shotgun wedding between traditional arts journalism and the many new models offered through new technologies. Can we make this marriage work? We better keep trying, if only for the sake of the children.

Nov 25, 2014, the TV news channels first gave the news - Sitara Devi no more. It made national news because she was a firebrand, diehard dancer with spunk and substance.

- Kathak exponent Sitara Devi (born on 8 Nov 1920) passed away in the early hours of November 25, 2014 at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai. She was 94. She combined the elements of two schools of Kathak, which had developed in Banaras and Lucknow. She represented a lost age when Kathak used to be performed for the whole night. Rabindranath Tagore described her as Nritya Samragini, meaning the empress of dance, after watching her performance when she was just 16 years old. Sitara Devi was a recipient of prestigious awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri and Kalidas Samman.
- Actor, director, choreographer, writer and composer Veenapani Chawla, passed away around 11am on November 30, 2014 at a hospital in Pondicherry. She was 67. In 1981, she founded the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research in Pondicherry to promote research into the creation of new performance methodologies. She was one of the pioneers of experimental theatre in contemporary India. Trained in Mayurbhanj Chhau, Kalaripayattu, Koodiyattam and Dhrupad singing, she has received the Zee Astiva Award (2006) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puruskar (2010). The Theatre of Veenapani Chawla: Theory, Practice, and Performance edited by Shanta Gokhale offers insights into the artist's creative process and her oeuvre.

Sidis, Indians of African descent came to India via different routes and from different countries of origin, from the 13th century onwards. Contemporary African descended communities in India mostly refer to themselves as Sidis. In Gujarat, Sidis trace their genealogy to ancestral saint Bava Gor whose name is chanted in Sidi songs and dances. Sidis maintain a distinctive culture. This film documents some aspects of the culture and traditions and diverse histories of migration of the Sidis of Gujarat.

The folk art of Hungary is passed on faithfully from one generation to another in music, dance, crafts, and costume. Works of master craftsmen and women will be showcased ranging from wood carvings to egg painting, embroideries, handlooms, potteries, and folk costumes.

Péter Szűcs (clarinet) is a graduate from Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music and is currently a part of the doctoral (DLA) program at the Academy. The most important influences in the development of the young artist came with the association and lectures of various eminent musicians. He has been a prize-winner at several international competitions. Besides playing compositions of classicism and romanticism, he has a special interest in the music of 20th and 21st century. As a chamber musician, he frequently collaborates with many well known Hungarian ensembles and orchestras.
Péter Kiss (piano) began to play piano at the age of 9 and is a doctoral student at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. He won several prizes at national and international competitions. He has toured in several European countries and in the USA and as a chamber musician, he has been a part of various music festivals and summer courses. He got his first CD made in 2007. He is committed for contemporary music and made several world and national premieres, followed by radio recordings. He has also worked several times with UMZE Ensemble. He is also a member of Trio Inception and Ludium Ensemble and is primarily focused on the works of György Kurtág.
They were recently on a tour to Europe and gave contemporary music concerts in Paris, London, Rome, Helsinki, Warsaw, Tallin, Bucharest and Bratislava.

Feature film, directed by Zoltán Fábri (1969), colour, 104 min
This American-Hungarian co-production, based on Ferenc Molnár's world famous novel, a classic 'A Pál utcai fiúk', takes place in the early 1900s in Budapest and tells the story of two rival gangs of young boys who lay their claim to a vacant lot. The hostilities escalate yet never quite boil over into actual violence. Just when things get out of hand, however, the problem is “solved” by the municipal authority, which takes over the lot for future development.
The film was nominated for Oscar Award in 1969.

Remembrance and Commemoration - Lecture by Robinson
Delhi has been known as a city of monuments and yet what most people miss out on, are its unique roads, lanes, gardens and memorial buildings, which have a history of their own. The walk and talk will explore the Hungarian Centre’s building, its rich legacy, some of the lanes around it, and will end with a visit to the Gandhi Smriti (Tees January Marg), leading to a moment of silence in these chaotic times. Come and be part of this experience with an open mind!
Robinson, an alumnus of St. Stephen's College, Delhi is a Theologian, Meditation Practitioner, Poet, Art Critic and Curator of Heritage Walks, primarily based in Delhi. He describes himself as a traveler in life, who intends to journey well.
