A travel-friendly mridanga

RANJANI GOVIND

A mridanga that can be assembled? Have you heard of such an effort, where a mridanga can be fitted in parts and dismantled to make it tone-and-travel friendly? Bangalore’s mridangist, Srinivasa Anantharamaiah, the owner of Shantha Tabla Works near Balepete Circle, has pioneered the making of this three-piece mridanga after 18 months of research, which he demonstrated at the Suswaralaya College of Music’s anniversary celebrations at the Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira on Tuesdya. Laya stalwarts such as Srimushnam V. Raja Rao and B.N. Chandramouli declared that the innovation needs to be hailed.

“Without disturbing the ‘meetu’ and ‘chaapu’ (tonal effects) if a mridangist is offered nearly 12 shrutis at his disposal, the novelty is worth recognising and trying out for its merits,” said Mr. Raja Rao.

The new three-part mridanga still retains jackfruit wood for its body make-up. The two drum heads on either side are made into separate pieces, fitted with nut-and-bolt with steel bars.

They can be interchanged with different ‘shruti-drums’ or drum heads that can be assembled and removed to suit the tonal requirements of a concert. “Mridangists can carry just one instrument with drum changers to suit different baseline pitches,” explains Srinivasa.

“While mridangist H.S. Sudhindra says it actually is a ‘green effort’ as it reduces the cutting of jackfruit trees, the two variations of drum heads when alternated can bring in shrutis from one to six!” he says. Market sources say at least 20 mridangas are sold in a day in India, and three feet of a healthy tree is required to make one mridanga. Mr. Srinivasa has also attempted a glowing Brass Mridanga, weighing just 7 kg. The three-piece nut-and-bolt mridanga weighing 11 kg will cost Rs. 12,000 upwards. Call 98440 27006 for details.

Music magazine launched

RANJANI GOVIND

A new music magazine, ‘Saamagaana- The First Melody’ brought out by R.R. Ravishankar, managing trustee, Bharatiya Samagana Sabha, was formally launched by the head of Sharada Peetha, Sringeri Jagathguru, Sri Bharathi Theertha Swami here on Monday.

Monthly

This Bengaluru-based subscription-monthly, an Indian classical music magazine in English would also be available at book stores and libraries across India. Says Mr. Ravishankar, “We have been working on its contents for the last six months.” The novel treatment had music and its applications rather than an academic point of view with reviews and opinion. The idea was to have an unconventional offering and attract even the non-classical connoisseurs, into reading a magazine that had absorbing melodic contents, he said.

Subjects such as fusion, music therapy, yoga and music are some of the pullers, along with the lighter quiz, sabha listings, tracing family melodic trees and jokes-corner.

The chronicling of achievers would form cover stories and pictorial series, says the Editor, Aparna M. Sridhar.

‘Not clinical’

“The magazine is not clinical in its approach, but a romantic and absorbing one where one could sing and read along. For example, its first pictorial series starts off with M.S. Subbulakshmi’s life,” she says. Call 98458 33033 for details.

Sohan Kumari Tiwari (84), the Sugama Sangeetha artiste who accompanied Karnataka’s father of Light Music P. Kalinga Rao along with her sister Mohan Kumari Tiwari, is no more. Sources close to the family said Sohan Kumari died on Wednesday in an old age home near Banashankari.

Sohan Kumari and Mohan Kumari were from Udaipur in Rajasthan. They were close associates of Kalinga Rao’s family. Mesmerised by his music, the sisters moved to Bangalore to be under his care from the 1940s. Both were trained in everything that Kalinga Rao dealt with in Jaanapada, Bhavageethe and Rangageethe. The trio performed together thereafter for more than three decades from the 1950s.

Amongst the hundreds of songs that Kalinga Rao, Sohan Kumari and Mohan Kumari popularised, it was Barayya Beladingale (folk), Yaakaluve ele ranga, Mugila Marige and Ilidu Baa Taayi (Da. Ra. Bendre), Brahma Ninge Jodistiniand Madikeri Mel Manju (G.P. Rajarathnam) that Sohan Kumari is said to have often recollected in the last few years.

Senior Sugama Sangeetha artiste Shimoga Subbanna says, “But for Kalinga Rao and his team, great poets such as Kuvempu, Bendre and Gopalakrishna Adiga would never have reached the common man. With Sohan Kumari and Mohan Kumari joining Kalinga Rao from the 1950s, Sugama Sangeetha itself saw a new wave with diverse styles of presentation setting newer trends.”

Y.K. Muddukrishna, student of Kalinga Rao and president of Karnataka Sugama Sangeetha Parishat, has mourned the death of Sohan Kumari Tiwari.
