Classical
Indian dance brings together many disciplines: while poetry, music and
movement define its very form, principles of painting, sculpture and
architecture define its aesthetics and grammar. And all of these
manifests through the human form that is so near yet so far in the
modern world.
The language of Indian Dance is amazingly aesthetic, creating forms of perfect body geometry based on intricate principles of physics, yoga and body engineering that are dressed and concealed beneath decorative gestures. At the same time it is imbued with deep symbolism, pointing to meanings other than the obvious and to a wisdom buried in our ancient myths. When perfected, it is yogic=, enabling the dancer to tap into rich inner states and experience higher states of Consciousness.
Every gesture in classical Indian dance operates at all these 3 levels and yet is playful in its expression and experience. The workshop will address this rich fabric of Indian Dance, relating it to its pure dance ( nritta) and mimetic dance (abhinaya).
The workshop will be conducted by Ms Mandakini Trivedi, an accomplished
performer, teacher, choreographer in the style of Mohini Attam. Her
chief work is in the understanding and teaching the art of Indian Dance
as a complete Yoga, rooted in subtle yogic principles. Mandakini owes
this vision entirely to her spiritual mentor Swami Shri Harish
Madhukar. As the Creative Head of the Nateshvari Dance gurukul she is working towards training young dancers to perform with a deep awareness of this yoga. She conducts residential programmes at Shaktiyogashrama Gurukul, initiating dancers and lay persons into the spiritual principles of Indian Art and holistic lifestyles.
She is the author of 3 books on Indian Dance – The Yoga Of Indian Dance, Sutras on Dance, Nepathya – Behind The Curtain. She has also authored ‘Ananda Yoga – Conversations on Happiness’, being a record of her guru’s teachings.
Workshop date: Saturday, 14th March 2015
Time: 10 am to 4 pm
Workshop fees: Rs 1000/-

NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) is a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc. Through this initiative, we offer online courses and certification in various topics.
Online course: Free for all, Certification exam: For a nominal fee
Current and upcoming courses are listed below. Click on a course name to see more details about it.
This site uses your Google account for authentication. You will need to log in to register for any course.
After registration you will be able to see the course contents as and when they are made available by the course instructorsDr. Lakshmi Sreeram
Course begins in May 2015.
Carnatic music is a vibrant musical tradition that has evolved, and is largely practiced, in Southern India and wherever else there is a significant diaspora of South Indians.
A highly nuanced and tonally rich melodic music, its rhythmic aspect too is considerably complex. As much as it is rooted in tradition there is immense demand on the improvisational skills of the musicians. The coming together of these two aspects in a concert can give the listener a musical high.
What makes this music so unique and rich? What happens in a typical concert? What do we look for? Who were the great musicians and composers who have made the music what it is today? These are some of the questions this course will try to answer.
What does a student need to bring to this course? An interest in music, a willingness to bite into a music technically and aesthetically very different from popular music-s and other forms like Western Classical music.
It would help if you have heard Carnatic music before, but that is not absolutely necessary. You will hear plenty during the course.
Dr. Lakshmi Sreeram
Trained in Carnatic music since her childhood, Lakshmi has been a performer for over 25 years. She also performs Khayal, a north Indian tradition of classical music. She has a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Bombay focusing on the idea of dhvani in Anandavardhana’s Dhvanyaloka, a 9th century Sanskrit text in the tradition of Alankarasastra (literary theory).
