Flute recital by twin prodigies

Heramba and Hemantha
When one observes the list of achievements of flautists Heramba and Hemantha, it is incredible that the two are still in college.
While Heramba is a regular winner at national-level competitions in both the vocal and flute categories, Hemantha is the recipient of the prestigious CCRT National Scholarship for flute. The duo bagged the first prize at AIR’s National Carnatic Flute Competition last year. “My twins have been listening to music at home since they were born. They are immersed in melody as the Ambale Subba Rao pedigree runs in the family,” says father and mridangist Ambale Satyaprasad, adding that the third generation of musicians have started flowering.
Ambale Subba Rao was a dancer, vocalist, gamaki artist and a Harikatha vidwan. He had earned the Bhakthi Sangeetha Ratna title and made history when he introduced Purandaradasa’s kritis into Bharatanatya.
“As a young boy, I was witness to one of his melody-miracles,” says Satyaprasad. “A farmer in Siddapura village near Madikeri had implored Subba Rao to sing for his parched fields as a last hope for inviting rain. A heartfelt, earnest Amrutavarshini raga unfolded from my father. Before he had finished the ‘Anandamruta Varshini’ kriti, the sky had opened up to the astonishment of people gathered there.”
Heramba and Hemantha were trained in vocals by Satyaprasad, and aunts Bharati and Rajeshwari. Their desire to learn flute with Mysore A.V. Prakash was owing to their love for the bamboo instrument . “We have a vocalised format that is transported on to the flute,” they say.
They are looking forward to presenting Dhanyasi, along with Apoorva Krishna (violin) and Akshay Anand (mridanga), at the SGBS Trust, Unnati Centre, 5 p.m., NGEF Layout, Sadanandanagar.
