SPOTLIGHTING THE IMAGE WITHIN
a Digital Presentation
by artist BHARATI KAPADIA
on Saturday 3rd September 2016 at 6.30 pm.
The thrust of the presentation Spotlighting the Image Within is ‘unfolding’: uncovering the hidden connections which play a crucial role in shaping the outward form of an art work. Why zero in on uncovering the hidden behind an image in the context of art? Because, very often, it is just this particular area which stands between the spectator and the art work she is trying to enjoy- enjoy as in ‘savour’, ‘experience’—what she misses is the connection between the art work and herself, her life, which would allow her an entry into the work of art.
Towards this finale of unfolding the connection between image and the experience from which it has emerged, Bharati will be sharing with you 4 instances: 2 from the epic Ramayana, 1 from Bhaagvat Puraan which deals with stories of Krishna's childhood exploits and 1 from the treatise on Indian aesthetics, the Naatyashaastra, which highlight and bring to the fore, certain aspects of the Indian ethos that form a vital part of our cultural identity. This will be followed by a few images of her work selected from different phases to trace how certain features in the work reflect the experience from which they are born.
Bharati Kapadia is a visual artist and a performer based in Mumbai. Her work addresses concerns related to memory, identity, inner evolution and she has evolved techniques where intervention through light becomes crucial for a complete viewing experience. She has initiated and created art related projects and presented lecture-demonstrations at art institutions and museums in India and abroad. Her work is in several collections in India, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, UK and USA. Her current solo performance project Untold Stories, has been presented at several venues in India and abroad including Munich, Istanbul and in May this year Untold Stories participated in the Liverpool International Theatre Festival, where it was awarded the certificate for Excellence in Solo Performance.
