Postdoctoral Research Assistant

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the project “Cross-Disciplinary and Multi-Cultural Perspectives on Musical Rhythm”. The purpose of this position is to investigate novel computational approaches for the analysis and generation of rhythms from various music traditions, and to build the infrastructure needed to support such work, most notably the collection and annotation of a corpus of recorded music. The initial focus of the project will be on traditional music from the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, the Levant, and Persian Gulf regions.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a track record of research and publication in one or more of the following areas: computational musicology, ethnomusicology, music information retrieval, and computer music, and should have completed (or be close to completing) their doctoral degree in a relevant field. Excellent music and programming skills are essential. Ability to communicate in Arabic will be advantageous. New York University is an equal opportunity employer, and we would like to especially encourage applications from female researchers.

The post is based at the NYU Abu Dhabi University Campus in the United Arab Emirates, and will be affiliated with the Music and Audio Research Laboratory of New York University. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team including Carlos Guedes, Godfried Toussaint, Robert Rowe, and Juan Pablo Bello.

The position is full-time for a duration of between 18 and 24 months, and starting no later than June 2015. The salary is $50,000/year with additional housing allowance, health insurance, home leave travel, and 25 days of paid vacation per year.

Please email inquiries and application materials to Dr. Carlos Guedes (carlos...@nyu.edu). Applications should include a letter of intent, full CV including a list of publications, and the names/email addresses of three references. We will start reviewing applications immediately and until the position has been filled.
