Dear all,

A month ago today we were faced with several aisles of gastronomic choices, and pool-side breakout sessions. In commemoration of such wonderful times, we wanted to give you an update on where we are with all things workshop and ask you for some information.

First, many thanks to those of you who have contributed photos, notes, links to data, a new google group, and general comments. This is wonderful! please keep them coming. If you haven't done so, please share with the group your workshop notes and initiatives for future work (through the wiki), as well as any photos, videos, etc that you may have.

You'll be glad to know that the Journal of New Music Research has just approved a special issue on "Musical rhythm: Cross-disciplinary and multi-cultural perspectives" to be edited by us. The journal's editor in chief is very excited and highly supportive of this initiative. An official call for papers will go out in May, with a submission deadline in October, and a tentative date of publication of December 2014. The issue will roughly be 100 pages long, which adds up to about 8 articles plus a short introduction. We expect this limitation to make the call highly competitive. In order to ensure a good balance between on and off-workshop papers, different disciplines and topics, it would be very helpful for us to know asap whether you are intending to submit a paper and, especially, if you are intending a joint submission with other workshop participants. Please note that all submissions will go through a strict peer-review process, and an invitation to submit does not guarantee publication.

We are also working with the NYU-AD Institute to open the workshop's website to the public (so please feel free to share/post the links as you see fit), as well as posting online videos of the talks, panel and concert. There is a lot of video editing that needs to occur prior to that, so this process will take a couple of months at least.

Finally, we are starting the planning stages of a follow-up workshop in Spring 2014. Not a lot to report on that front just yet, but stay tuned!

all the best,

Juan, Carlos, Godfried and Robert

Dear organizers,

Just a quick response regarding the special issue: I am planning to submit a paper; it will be a single-author paper, a full version of the study of which I presented selected results at the workshop.

Although the study is using music by a Western/European composer, I do think it speaks to the cross-disciplinary/multi-cultural perspective. It is cross-disciplinary because it combines music theory and analysis with behavioral experimental techniques from music psychology. And, although representing a strand of Western music, it also addresses a micro-culture of music characterized by complexity (which raises issues of expertise and influence of musical training).

Could you please let me known if you think that this article would meet the needs of this special issue? I was planning to submitting this study to JNMR anyway prior to the NYU-AD workshop, but if I was to send it as a submission, it would affect how I contextualize the study.

Thank you for your feedback! And I look forward to hearing about future workshop plans.

Best regards,
Ève
