Hi Guys,
Just wanted to thank you both again for giving me the opportunity to
come on your show to talk about CCHits.net.
I had a listen to the show today... man alive, I really did rathole
the show on more than a few occasions. You asked a few questions that
I never actually answered so, here's some answers to them :)
1) Vote weighting
Yes, CCHits does weight votes... all votes are worth 1 point, no
matter who votes, but, if the track is played on a weekly show or a
monthly show, it loses 5% of it's votes each time it appears on a
show. This helps to keep the same tracks away from the No. 1 spot week
after week after week. Daily shows and external links do not affect
the vote weighting at all.
2) How did the site come about?
There's a few "origin stories" that all end up with CCHits being
created, but the main reason was that I wanted something we could play
at the hackspace without them needing to pay collection agency fees.
Sites like Rathole Radio and TheBugCast influenced the music
selections, while Shot Of Jaq suggested the daily show length.
StackOverflow encouraged me to not require logins to participate and
Lorna Jane Mitchell encouraged me (indirectly) to start with an API
and build up from there. Also, going to the PodCrawl with some members
of the Association Of Music Podcasting (AMP) encouraged me to actually
put my money where my mouth was!
3) Do I want to make CCHits my full-time job?
Nope. I want it to be an entirely money-neutral endevour. I get
"unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth for-life" hosting for my
own project sites and I quite like the host I'm with, so unless they
ask me to serve content from somewhere else, or it gets too flakey, I
don't even need to cover hosting fees. As a result, the only thing I
need to contribute is admin and coding time, and those flow around my
non-creative day-job... it's an expressive creative outlet for me.
I think that's everything, but if I think of anything else, I'll be
sure to drop you a note or maybe even guest again, if you can cope
with the randomness (and the patchy audio!)
All the best,
--
