In the post page, there is the Icons field.
1) do I just type the name of the icon or do I need to add the path to
the folder as well?
2) what is the path to the physical location of the icon folder to
upload the images to?

In order to create an icon, you should create a new "Image" content type. You can then assign a taxonomy term to the "Icons" category. This is the term that you would then type into the "Icons" text field while editing a dashboard statistic. Here is a link to an image we use:

Again, you should create images using the image content type. You will upload your icon in the edit form and you shouldn't have to worry about the path. Our images are typically 85px x 85px. We licensed a set of icons and created some of our own as well.
