Hello Mobile MUSE 3 Platform Developers,

Jim, Jean, Stephen, David, Roland & I met at New Media BC on Monday and discussed the current documentation available on the platform to cultural partners.  We agreed that more is needed to help folks who are completely new to Mobile MUSE understand what the various components do and how they are useful.  Therefore, for each component, we would like descriptive text (about 2/3 of a page) that outlines:

    - Here's what it does
    - Here's why it's useful
    - Here are the requirements
    - Here are the dependencies (e.g. Mobile Dialog, etc.)

We will be revising the main page for developers.mobilemuse.ca to show a list of all the components, and this descriptive text will hide behind a 'Tell me more' button beside each component.

Please send the descriptive text for your components to this group by Monday, January 19th.

- Here's what it does

 

Livecast lets you stream live video from your phone to anyone connected to the Web. It can be viewed live or later on-demand. Embed tags are readily available for each live event, so you can easily host Livecast stream on your own website.

 

- Here's why it's useful

 

With Livecast you can broaden the reach of your event to include people who can’t attend in person, but want to join the experience in real-time. And because Livecast works on mobile phones, you can incorporate members of the community to join in making the broadcast.

 

- Here are the requirements

 

Livecast supports a wide variety of Windows Mobile, Nokia S60 and other devices, but you’ll want to verify that your phone is supported (http://www.livecast.com/company/Support.htm)

 

Playback can be either in QuickTime or Windows Media, and requires that a viewer must have the appropriate player installed.

 

A wireless data account is required for streaming, which can be accessed via a carrier data account or a WiFi connection (not all phones support WiFi).

 

- Here are the dependencies

 

If you want to geotag your video with a location using the MUSE system, you’ll need to use the Location and Mapping component to record the exact location of your phone first.

 

If you want to publish your video stream to a SIFT channel, you’ll need to subscribe to the SIFT tool first, so it’s available to select when you create a new event in Livecast component.

RawMaterials:

RawMaterials is a downloadable application for Mac OSX, that collects social media assets (images, videos, text messages) from the MUSE platform, and caches them on a user's local machine. Information about the downloaded material is sent via OpenSoundControl (OSC), allowing other processes to make use of the content as it arrives. Live video streams are also maintained by the application, providing a computer with a generous amount of user-generated material for a particular event.

The vision for this system is that an artist's computer can be endowed with rich media content shared from the public at large, in real time as an event occurs. For example, a video jockey (VJ) can mix in new images/videos of the audience, or a video wall can be created to display all publicly-generated content. A multitude of performances and installations can be created where an artistic interpretation can be applied to the raw materials supplied by the public.

Note for VJs:

For the VJ community, we have developed a plugin for Modul8 (VJ software available from www.GarageCube.com), that listens to messages from RawMaterials, and automatically adds new content to the VJ's media set.

Usage / Interaction with the MUSE Platform:


RawMaterials requires that content be organized in advance, using the 'SIFT Tool Aggregator' and 'LivecastMC' components. Upon launching the RawMaterials application and logging in, you will see all SIFT channels and Livecast events that you have created. When you select an item, assets will begin to be cached, and OSC messages will be sent after each completed download (alternatively, an OSC message can query the RawMaterials for a list of images, videos, streams, or texts).

We also recommend the use of the 'Mobile Dialog' component, configured to send SMS and MMS messages to a SIFT channel. This will capitalize on the ubiquity mobile phones, and allow the public to participate on-site at an event.

Requirements:

RawMaterials requires Mac OSX 10.4 or greater. We also recommend a fast computer (2GB+ of RAM), and a reliable internet connection.
