I’m trying to use your map download to mobile phone.  However, I get an error.  The SMS comes with a URL in it – specifically:  http://tinyurl.com/59sp6q

If you click on this link you will see the error.

I’m preparing a demo for Friday and would like this corrected please

Thanks!

Jim, I fixed a small glitch in how I was using the tinyurl api which was the root of the problem.

The old tinyurls (like the one below) will no longer work.

Please try your component again (thru SMS and Voice) to see if the new tinyurls work properly (it tested fine with my account, but you never know with authentication and so on).

Have some feedback from Glenn Iles of Whistler, who recently subscribed to the Location & Mapping Component, and tried to configure it on his own.

1) The 'Mobile interaction provided by' section was greyed out. This is because Glenn hadn't subscribed to a Mobile Dialog component, but he didn't know that he was supposed to. A little bit of text guidance here would greatly help out novice users.

2) After he'd created the component, Glenn didn't know what to do to use it. Again, some guidance text such as "To test this new component, SMS "clay map 123" to phone number 7785526873 would be very helpful.

Well the good news is I got the map.  The bad news, is the navigation options don’t work.  Try http://tinyurl.com/5zj26h and then click on the navigation options.

Clay,

Appreciate your feedback.

With form design there’s always a tradeoff between including guidance and cluttering up the page.    Everything you described below is already there – the guidance text pops up when you hover your mouse pointer over the question mark icons next to each field.

EG: hover over the 2-way SMS icon and the popup text describes what this is, and tells you to create a Mobile Dialog component if you want to use it.  After you select a Mobile Dialog the popup tells you the types of text messages you can send, the phone number to send them to, even the discriminator you need to use.

And of course, everything is documented in the user guide, but we all know how often people RTFM…

Having said that, I sat back and tried to identify the top three “head-scratch” moments a user might encounter when trying to use the L&M Component (Glenn’s feedback included two of these):

1)      The need to subscribe to the Mobile Dialog component first

2)      The need to enter landmarks after the component is created

3)      How to test the newly-created component

For each of these situations I added a very visual “post-it note” pop up and gives the user explicit instructions for how to proceed.

For case #1 the user will see this Tip (note that this isn’t an absolute requirement – some users may only want to use voice interaction):

For case #2 the user will see this Tip:

For case #3 the user will see this Tip:

In all other cases the post-it note will not appear, allowing the user to focus on the form itself.

Hope this helps.

Emmanuel
