Hi everybody, since so many of you asked at the international dormouse conference in Denmark whether it would be possible to get a copy of the dormouse movie on the development of the live-trapping method, I’ve looked into possibilities to make it available. We decided to distribute it to everybody who makes a donation, as large or as small as you can afford. This money will be used to continue our research, since we didn’t get any support for it for over a year now, so we are paying for everything (material, bait, travel expenses, overnight stays, …) ourselves. I have also made a few improvements and additions to the movie, like a short piece on how we made it, and footage of the entrance size needed by a fat (34-35 g) common dormouse to get into a nest box.
So if you want a copy, make a donation to the following account:

and send me an e-mail that you did this, so I can check the account and send you a download-link for the movie. The size of the movie is a little over 3 Gb. I have found one website that allows to send files up to 30 Gb for free (www.filemail.com), so I hope this will work (other suggestions are very welcome!), and if it doesn’t I will look for another solution (and in the worst case send you a dvd by regular mail). This arrangement is for home viewing only, so if you want to show it to a larger public (see more information below, there is an exception for showing it in a classroom) you have to contact me to get permission (regular prices for this are 1 euro per spectator with a minimum of 25 euros).
cheers,
Goedele
For those of you who didn’t see the movie yet, here some more information:

The common dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) is studied in Flanders to obtain more information on population parameters and habitat use. During the first years we weren’t able to recapture individuals often enough to draw conclusions. Therefore we developed a new live-trap method. After many observations we were able to adapt a trapping platform so that wood mice, yellow-necked wood mice and bank voles couldn’t reach the traps anymore, and only common dormice (and now and then a great tit) were captured and often recaptured. We filmed a lot during the observations and compiled the best fragments to a technical movie. You will see the animals themselves at work and they will regularly make you smile: how dormice and mice walk in and out of the traps without being captured, how at first all animals can reach the traps but after a few adaptations only the acrobatic dormice succeed without much effort, how birds and squirrels can still steal the bait, how wind makes trapping difficult, but how rain and cold can’t harm the dormice anymore in new traps with bedroom, dining room ánd porch, how small a hole should be to only just fit through, ...
