Happy 2009!

2008 was a crappy year for a lot of people, but I have to say I didn't have too many complaints. I started the year with some ambitious writing goals, only to be thrown off by the unexpected publication of my book, Playing For Keeps by Swarm Press. (If, for some reason, you totally missed this news, you can buy it here: http://tinyurl.com/7lwtrs  You can also buy it for the Amazon Kindle (http://tinyurl.com/9nsase), as an iPhone app (http://tinyurl.com/5nfqkq) or simply download the PDF for free (http://tinyurl.com/92busx)!) So much of 2009 was spent dealing with the marketing and podcasting efforts of Playing For Keeps that it put other projects on the back burner. It was worth it, though: the book reached #16 on Amazon's bestseller list and #1 in Science Fiction.

Another by-product of PFK's success was that I signed with the Waxman Literary Agency, and long-time listeners will be pleased to know that my agent and I are currently getting my audio novellas HEAVEN and HELL edited together to be one book to send to publishers. Cross your fingers - we have high, high hopes in 2009!

I have several projects that you're aware of that need to be wrapped up: The Takeover (http://www.zombinc.net) has two episodes left, and we find out what happens to our heroes working with their office full of zombies. My novel in progress, Project Underground (I still need a title, dangit), is nearing completion. My publisher is interested in Playing For Keeps 2, so that's also in my queue. And there's Heaven Season 5: War that's high on my priority list (watch for a new redesign of the Heaven site - http://www.heavennovel.com soon).

And all that said, there are some sooper seekrit projects going on, some collaborations, some solo, that I can't talk about just yet. Suffice to say it will be a busy year.

My writing podcast, I Should Be Writing (http://www.ishouldbewriting.com), is shaping up to be pretty interesting, with many interviews set for the early part of the year, and a resolution to be more on a weekly schedule than I have been. Stay subscribed!

In freelance writing, I'm still doing my monthly column for Knights of the Dinner Table Magazine (this isn't online, but you can find it at your friendly local comic book or gaming store). 2008 also had me start writing for Suicide Girls (http://www.suicidegirls.com - the site is NSFW, but the columns are - think Playboy for geeks: the pics are naughty, but the writing isn't), Tor (http://www.tor.com) and Suvudu (http://www.suvudu.com).

If you're a fan of my short Christmas stories, you can find the latest at Escape Pod (http://tinyurl.com/8xrgzr). That's four years in a row that I've had the Christmas story at EP, a tradition I'm quite proud of.

On the personal level, everyone is happy and healthy in the geekiest house in Durham, NC, with Jim and the Pink Tornado both working on their own mad scientist projects. We hope that all reading this had an excellent holiday season, and for 2009 we wish you all the health and happiness that you can handle. The holidays are the mushiest time of the year, and I truly would like to say that I am very grateful for my readers and listeners. My career has gone some amazing places that I never expected it to, and I couldn't have done it without all of you supporting me.

Thank you. I remain your faithful, parenthetical-loving podcaster, writer and orchid killer,

Mur
