Certificate in Small Business Management
Assessment 1: Strategic Profile
Name: Catherine Davis
Date: 31 March 2008
Learning Outcome 1: Develop a Vision Statement
1. "To positively change hapū, iwi and Māori communities by doing the
things I love."
Learning Outcome 2: Develop a Mission Statement
2. "I will achieve my vision through maintaining passionate, reliable,
quality service to hapū, iwi, Māori and local communities."
Learning Outcome 3: Develop Core Values for a Business
3. Integrity.
4. Client satisfaction.
5. High productivity.
6. Empowerment of others.
7. Excellent communication.
Learning Outcome 4: Develop an Organisational Culture Statement for a
Business
8. I have a strong sense of professionalism, yet at the same time am
down-to-earth. This ensures that I provide an accessible, responsive,
quality service. In this, I am motivated by a sincere desire to assist
people and communities to improve their wellbeing. Why? Because I know
that in helping others around me, I improve my own wellbeing!
9. I value interdependence over independence. While I have a range of
valuable skills and experiences as an individual, I know that the best
outcomes are achieved through collaborative efforts between myself, my
clients and my networks, whoever they may be.
10. I measure my business 'success' by the happiness I feel when
reflecting about the valuable contributions I have made to outcomes
for my clients, while achieving my own personal goals and aspirations.
I will strive to 'role-model' a financially-sustainable balanced work/
family life thereby encouraging and 'giving permission' to others to
attain the same.
Learning Outcome 5: Write Goals and Objectives using SMART Criteria
11. GOAL 1: To be in full self-employment by 31 December 2009.
§ Objective 1: To be in 0.8 F.T.E. (Full Time Equivalent) employment
at Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa by 31 May 2008.
§ Objective 2: To purchase my own business laptop, cellphone and
vehicle by 31 May 2008.
§ Objective 3: To secure my first consultancy contract by 31 May 2008.
§ Objective 4: To be in 0.4 F.T.E. employment at Te Rūnanga o Te
Rarawa by 28 February 2009.
12. GOAL 2: To earn $100,000 (before tax) from 1 April 2011 to 31
March 2012.
§ Objective 1: To earn enough during 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2011 to
pay all costs of the business, my living expenses, and still make
$10,000 additional disposable income.
§ Objective 2: To be in a position by 1 April 2011 to choose to turn
away work contracts due to an over-abundance of 'paying work' offered
to me.
Learning Outcome 6: Write a Business Description
13. I operate as a Sole Trader Consultant. My business segments
include hapū, iwi and community development, and advocacy of
indigenous human rights (including hapū and Māori rights under te
Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi).
14. My products and services include:
§ Policy and document analysis, peer review and drafting
§ Research
§ Community Education
§ Report writing
§ Strategic planning
§ Development of funding applications
§ Project management
§ Meeting facilitation
§ Small-medium event management.
15. While my intention is to focus my business locally within the Te
Hiku o Te Ika District and Te Tai Tokerau region, the nature of my
work means that the provision of many of my services is limited only
by my clients' access to communications technology. My strong
preference where possible is to assist meeting the needs of Māori and
local community groups. While my consultancy is new (established in
2008), it is founded on five years' experience working as a Government
policy analyst, eight years' experience working in a Managerial policy
analyst position for a local iwi authority, and six years' experience
in various working committees and governance positions.
