Can't Open Any Rom - Troubleshooting Tips?

I'm on Linux Mint 17 (32 bit) and Mupen64Plus 2.0.0.

I am unable to get Mupen64Plus to open any roms, whether they are zipped or as .n64 files.  I have tried multiple files.

There error message reads "UI-Console Error: couldn't open ROM file 'path/to/rom.n64' for reading."

What steps can I take to start troubleshooting this?

Hello effika,

Compressed roms (e.g. zipped) are not supported by the ui-console.

I see multiple possible problems:

- The path is unreachable (permission? spaces?)

- The rom extension is invalid. I don't know .n64 files. Are you sure it's not .z64? Could you rename and try again?

- The rom is "really" invalid...

If you could give us the real path we would probably be able to see the problem. It sounds like a problem with the loading of the file specifically. As Dorian said, that could mean paths with spaces, non-escaped symbols like parentheses, and others. Try moving the ROM to your /home/username directory and run it from there.

@Dorian mupen64plus doesn't care about extension. It detects the style of ROM based on what's in the file. .v64 files load fine as .n64, .z64, and even random extensions like .asd, or no extension at all.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me!  There was a typo in my path. 

Now to figure out my controller set-up.  :)

I am having the same problem! What happens is that whenever i try to load SM64 it just doesn't open it and the window closes. Help please?
