Ok. Foolish me. It does work, for me at least, using saves from 1.5. I
had thought I was saving, but since my shift and control keys aren't
blue and green, I had gotten confused as to which saved and which
canceled. I tried again, and it saves just fine, without loading
states. Thanks for the responses - sorry to bother with a non-problem.
@Willrands: I've only tried saving one game, so I can't confirm your
issue here.
