BATORS, STIV - DISCONNECTED
Originally
released in 1980, this was Stiv Bators' first solo album. Now reissued with 2
bonus tracks, not available on the original version, a slightly different
picture on the cover (the actual unfiltered photo as used on the 1980 issue)
and a booklet with extensive liner notes and photos. Bators was the man who
destroyed Rocket from the Tombs, from which he hijacked half the members to
found one of the most influential American punk bands to have existed, The
Dead Boys. Stiv had turned in his broken teeth for a more power pop oriented
solo career. This is not an album recorded by a has-been former punk
idealist; instead it's a true step forward into another unknown arena packing
all the glare and attitude that remained from the last. The music is more similar
to 60's power pop than the vicious punk rock that Bators became known for
originally, while a member of The Dead Boys. New generations continue to
discover it. It still holds up very well and sounds as fresh and vibrant as
ever.

There was
a seismic shift in the opean punk scene when Californian Mike Sobieski and
Norah Findlay selected the Basque phenomenon Kike Turmix as their frontman in
1987. Madrid was the place to be, and with the addition of the British bass
player Barnaby Bowles and later Spanish Angel Ramos, The Pleasure Fuckers
crafted a singular sound, grabbing punk and doing rock while simultaneously
grabbing rock and doing punk. In 1988, Simple Needs was the first of a long
succession of singles, EPs, LPs, videos, soundtracks, and documentaries, and
the band was known from Helsinki to Peru and Prague to Seattle. Kike left our
world in 2005. Dietmar Post, one of The Pleasure Fuckers first fans and now
of Play Loud! and Kike's widow Marga Gaffaro compile Malasa;a Republic, an
incredibly cohesive collection of unedited, early and live recordings.

in the history of Peruvian rock: We All Together. Their original compositions

can go Moog, so can cumbia! This surprisingly funky novelty tune has one of
those break-beat intros that loop makers drool for. Weird synth noodles and
chipmunk chorus vocals only add to the "what the?" factor (in a
good way!). On the flipside, another updated Costeño classic, with crazy
synth noodles, scratchy guitar looping and odd vocals. Hats off to Fruko and
Fuentes for letting this experiment in Afro-modernization happen. First time
reissue as a separate release, previously only available as part of the
long-deleted "Big Box of Afrosound" (VAMPI 45062).

AFROSOUND - LA DANZA DE LOS MIRLOS
Back in
stock! Afrosound's mission was to emulate the guitar-heavy tropical sounds
emanating from Perú and Ecuador at the time. To add to the hippie vibe, there
were plenty of whacky improvised vocal asides (called 'inspiraciones'), plus
custom fuzz, wah-wah, flange and echo effects boxes for the guitar and
keyboards. A barrage of odd sounding synths, drum machines and other
electronic flourishes were also sprinkled in to spice up the proceedings. The
dozen tracks on Afrosound's debut long play make for a surprisingly diverse
palette from which these Colombian musicians painted their daring portrait of
Peruvian cumbia, returning the favor in bold colors that still resonate
almost 50 years later. "La danza de los mirlos" kicks off with most
famous Afrosound hit of all, 'Caliventura', a genius blend of funk and
cumbia. Also, there are several covers including various Colombian costeño
classics, a groove oriented son montuno / cumbia hybrid, Fruko's bomba-funk
ditty 'El chorrillo', the melancholic psychedelic cumbia 'Esperando por ti'
and the rocking cumbia andina gem 'Cabeza de chorlito'. This lovingly
restored reissue features the artwork for the Peruvian edition, which was
licensed and issued by Lima's El Virrey label in 1974.

Attarazat Addahabia & Faradjallah's album came to us as quite a mystery.
Our friends from Radio Martiko got access to the studio archive of the
Boussiphone label and a reel labeled "Faradjallah" was among the
items they had found there. After listening to the selection of reels they
borrowed, Radio Martiko felt it was not a fit for their label and helped us
licensing it from Mr. Boussiphone instead. We knew nothing about the band. We
just had the reel with the music but very little information. What we knew
was that the music was incredible and very unique. Gnawa sounds were combined
with funky electronic guitars, very dense layers of percussions and female
backing vocals more reminiscent of musical styles further south than Morocco.

supported by several summer festival appearances. Only Johnny Clarke would
come close to challenging Bob Marley ^ Dennis Brown for reggae-s crown, his
unequaled run of hit songs, powered by Bunny Lee and King Tubby-s aggravating
versions, continued without a pause during the mid/70-s leading Johnny to
twice being named Jamaica-s Artist Of The Year *and the signing of a two
album recording deal with Virgin-s Frontline label(. Many of Johnny Clarke-s
classic roots recordings gathered here were first given wider international
exposure in 1998 with the release of Blood ^ Fire-s excellent 13/Track
@Dreader Dread / 1976/1978@ compilation, which has disappeared from the

of the greatest radio shows ever made onto a record as it combines a Radio
interview with Roky Erickson in full gloom while he is presenting the demos

the play previously released on vinyl by France's Sponge Records in 1976..
The bonuses (interviews, demos, rarities) are dandy, but the album is
treasure enough. Its retro-metal chops have more kaboom than the
irony-diluted pap of current poss, and its bent lyrics mop the floor with
wannabe-kooks like Jad Fair. Some savvy touches- such as Roky's progressive
pre-PC designation that the swamp monsters are 'alligator-persons'- hint that
Roky was more lucid than he let on.
