Escape-ism is the work of Ian Svenonius, the author of "Supernatural
Strategies for Making a Rock n Roll Group," "The Psychic
Soviet," and "Censorship Now!!", the singer of The Make-Up,
Chain & The Gang, XYZ, Too Much, et cetera, the writer/director of
"What Is A Group?" (the world's only rock 'n' roll sci-fi
documentary exploitation film), the host of "Soft Focus," the
musician-on-musician chat show that preceded all the pretenders, and, more
recently, his first full-length picture « The Lost Record ». On this new
album, he plays minimalist electronic rock'n'roll with just an electric
guitar, a microphone, an analogue-sounding drum machine, a tape deck, and the
help of Alexandra Cabral on synthetizer and backing vocals, creating the rawest
and most stripped-back manifestation of his singular muse to date.

A product of North Memphis' segregated Dixie Homes housing complex, The Sweet
& Innocent arrived during the Soulsville U.S.A. renaissance in the early
'70s. While Al Bell was busy across town turning Stax into a national Black
powerhouse, Ron and Sari Bledsoe's short-lived Active imprint operated out of
a storefront on Chelsea Avenue, using nearby Manassas High as a talent pool.
Rubye James and Linda Royston 'Sweet & Innocent' joined a roster that
included The Epics, First Company, and The Memphis Mustangs, groups all lost
to the tide of time. The Sweet & Innocent-s are a rare blend of
atmospheric blues, post-Beehive girl group harmony, and Jacksons-inspired kid
soul. 'Spin it one time for me', Ron Bledsoe penned on promo copies of their
January 1972 burner 'Cry Love'. Let's
spin it again.

The 2nd
volume of the The Weekend Starts Here series deals exclusively with the
Popcorn genre. Popcorn is a style of music and dancing first established in
Belgium in the 1970s and 1980s. The style includes a wide variety of mostly
American and British recordings of R^B and pop music made between the late
1950s and mid 1960s, often relatively obscure, and characterised by a slow or
medium, rather than fast, tempo. The Popcorn music scene first developed from
dances held at the Groove discotheque in Ostend, where mid/tempo soul and ska
music played by DJ Freddy Cousaert became popular in the late 1960s. In
September 1969, a café, De Oude Hoeve, opened in a converted farm barn at
Vrasene near Antwerp, and began holding dance competitions on Sunday
afternoons. Soon up to 3,000 people began attending each week, dancing in a
@slow swing@ style. De Oude Hoeve was later renamed Popcorn and the special
genre has it's name. Later on the Dj's messed up a perfectly fine recipe by
adding all kinds of pop tunes as long as the tempo was right. This 10"
however features 12 pure Popcorn groovers from the "golden era".

Rodrigo Brandao's 'Outros Espaco' was recorded in Sao Paulo in late 2019 with
a luxury crew: Tulipa Ruiz and Jucara Marcal added to the microphone, Thiago
Franca played flute and alto and tenor saxophones, Guilherme Granado dealt
with the synthesizers and effects, Marcos Gerez measured the overall pulse
with his electric bass, Thomas Rohrer played soprano and 'rabeca' (fiddle),
and Paulo Santos dealt with the percussion. In addition to the base band, the
album also features some members of Sun Ra Arkestra's current incarnation.
Respectively: Danny Thompson (RIP) on baritone and bongo, Elson Nascimento on
'surdo' (tom drum), Knoel Scott on tenor and soprano, with the giant Marshall
Allen in a prominent role leading the collective towards the unknown, while
playing the alto sax and synthesizer.

New album of Berlin based French multi-instrumentalist and electro rocker,
Fred Bigot. Fuzz guitars, synths, drum boxes, and two incredible covers of
classics, Dancing in the street and Bad moon rising as you have never heard
them! Electronicat is the alias of Fred Bigot. Wild Animal is his 8th studio
album. In 2014, working on a sound performance just using the human voice and
guitar recreating a road trip he had undertaken across the USA in 2011, he
invested in a piece of almost forgotten and rather cumbersome analogue
equipment: a talk box, the ideal tool to generate unpredictable results,
giving the music a more organic, unruly nature. Back in his studio in
Neukölln, and with his project Electronicat in mind, he began his
experiments, combining the talk box with the multitude of instruments
available including a fantastic range of old synths and keyboards. The result
was 10 songs, two of which were cover versions. Soon after, Fred began work
on a new project 'The Magic Ray' and his talk box experiments were put to one
side. Come 2020, a new studio in north Berlin and the first pandemic
lockdown: while sorting and sifting through recordings, Fred rediscovered
these 10 songs, this Wild Animal described by one Ian Svenonius as "the
king of the jungle cats, king of electro-beat rock'n'roll music. Still
sleazy, still dangerous, still mysterious, Electronicat is the final stand of
sound in the dead-end cul-de-sac road to nowhere that rock'n' roll music has
found itself stuck at. Electronicat is the only hope for a way out.

Incredible circumstances land the Dead in France playing for free outside a
Chateau once inhabited by Chopin to about 200 people after a downpour wipes
away their original festival location. Story goes that everyone is getting
drunk from the Chateau open wine cellar, and playfully throwing each other in
the pool throughout as the Dead play to the local yokels, fire brigade,
village children, and a few lucky deadheads. Love the electric piano
throughout...People have described this show as uninspiring and standard, but
you can hear the effortlessness of the Dead as they ease their way to
wherever they want to go over.

Maybe Tomorrow is the only album released by the British group The Iveys, who
later renamed themselves Badfinger. It was issued in 1969 on the Apple label
in Japan, West Germany and Italy. Although the album was scheduled to be
released worldwide, the release in the US and UK at that time was halted
without explanation. Many reasons for halting the album have been suggested
by the band and Apple employees, but the most common theory is that Apple's
newly hired president, Allen Klein, stopped all non-Beatle releases on Apple
until he could examine the company's finances, which were in disarray at the
time.

MERRYWEATHER & CAREY - VACUUM CLEANER
Canadian bassist/vocalist Neil Merryweather relocated to Los Angeles in the
late 1960s and hooked up with the singer, actress and future Penthouse pet,
Lynn Carey. They would find greater fame upon forming the band Mama Lion in
1972, but Vacuum Cleaner captures the prototype of the group on this
collaboration cut the year before, after RCA signed them as a duo.
Merryweather's bass is a solid anchor and his harmony and musical
arrangements help keep everything in place: Canadian keyboardist JJ Velker
adds atmosphere, but it is Carey's powerful voice that really drives this
hard rockin' beast, gleaning comparisons with Janis Joplin. Merryweather
& Carey notably appeared in Russ Meyer's The Seven Minutes too.

Neurotics Beggars Can Be Choosers hit #6 on the UK independent chart in 1983.
Formed in 1979 by vocalist and guitarist Steve Drewett, whose
socialist-flavoured lyrics - never overbearing - have been grouped with those
of Easterhouse, Billy Bragg, or the Housemartins, The Neurotics sounded like
a synthesis of everything cool in the first wave of punk: from The Ramones to
The Clash to mid-period Undertones. They were sharp-edged, but still
fun-sounding, with great hooks and melodies and socially aware lyrics. This
is criminally underrated Ramones-influenced political pop-punk whose titles
like
iving with Unemployment' and et Up And Fight' speak for themselves. A must!

SEATTLE 1993
The MTV-sponsored evening began with opening sets by Cypress Hill and the
Breeders. Nirvana's set began with Cobain's purposefully harsh "Radio
Friendly Unit Shifter," whose title mocks the music industry's incorrigible
focus on producing inoffensive, commercially viable pop pap. From there it
provided a perfect sonic overview of the band's newest songs, a few hits,
some old favorites, and even a cover of David Bowie's 1970 gem "The Man
Who Sold the World." One review stated: "This is one of the wildest
shows by Nirvana ... and could easily be the considered the antithesis to the
band's Unplugged performance in New York".

ONE WAY SYSTEM - GIVE US A FUTURE - THE SINGLES AND DEMOS
Back in stock! Formed in 1979 in the northern English town of Fleetwood,
Lancashire (a former major fishing port that had declined since the 1960s),
One Way System was one of the most highly-rated 'Street punk' groups that
spun off from the British hardcore and Oi scenes. Mowhawk-sporting lead
singer Gavin Whyte was initially joined by guitarist Craig Halliday, bassist
Gaz Buckley and rapid-fire drummer Tez McDonald< the early demos of
"Jerusalem," "Spokesmen For Teenagers" and
"1980s" included here were cut with that lineup, before former
Zyklon B member David "Crabby" Ross joined as second guitarist,
yielding the incendiary single "Stab The Judge" and the No Entry
EP, issued by Blackpool's Lightbeat Records in 1981. Halliday later quit the
group and when McDonald joined The Fits, accomplished drummer Tommy Couch
brought a totally different musical dimension, his command of the kit well
beyond the abilities of most of his contemporaries. In addition to the demos
and the Lightbeat material, this compilation also collects the singles and
EPs issued by Cherry Red's Anagram subsidiary between 1982-84, including the
inaugural 45, "Give Us A Future."

An original vinyl copy of SPIRITS AND WORM (A&M SP 4229) is among the
rarest collectors item LPs around. This item was released briefly in 1969,
primarily in the New York City area and only a few copies got out before it
disappeared. The legend goes that the album was pulled from distribution
because the cover art (a couple of goats resting on a tombstone) was rumored
to be satanic. A listen to the music, a collection of love songs with a
Jefferson Airplane and Santana type sound, quickly disspells such
associations. 'Fanny Firecracker' and 'You and I Together', featuring the
Grace Slick-like vocals of Adrianne Maurici, came out as a single (A&M
1104). Other group members were Carlos Hernandez (primary songwriter), Artie
Hicks Jr., Alfred Scotti, and Tommy Parris. Don't know any more about them. Would
like to know where they are today and what they-re doing. Collectors of
obscure vintage psychedlia shouldn't miss out on this.

SPOOKY TOOTH - IT'S ALL ABOUT
Reissue on vinyl for this full-length debut from British blues-rockers Spooky
Tooth. It has a tone similar to Traffic with its psychedelic take on the
influential pop and soul music of the '60s. A few cover tunes including Janis
Ian's 'Society's Child' and the Nashville Teens' 'Tobacco Road' are included,
but original songs like the soulful ballad 'It Hurts You So' and 'Bubbles'
(with its Beach Boys sensibility) are the real standouts. The cheery,
psychedelic 'It's All About a Roundabout' is the catchiest number by far. On
this dreamy cut, vocalist&keyboardist Gary Wright demonstrates some sharp
melodic and compositional instincts. Although Spooky Tooth eventually became
better-known for their straightforward blues-rock, the trippy pop of It-s All
About counts as a career highlight for the group. Fans of late-'60s British
rock are definitely advised to check out this impressive release.
