Recorded live on a hot-ass night of July the 24th 2009 at
Dr. Johnny Walker's (Soledad Brothers / Cut In the Hill Gang)
flat in Covington, Kentucky, this is the BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES
absolutely live and kicking out the jam Southern style. It's a
VINYL and DIGITAL ONLY release. The LP comes on COLOR VINYL,
pressing limited to 1,000 copies.Black Diamond Heavies is a
self-described punk-ass blues duo from the South consisting of
John Wesley Myers on bass keys, fender Rhodes, organ, and lead
vocals and Van Campbell on drums, percussion and vocals.This
is a another slab of grungy, dirty, blues punk rock'n'roll
with a heavy, greasy, touch of soul. This time the two-piece
traveled to Akron, Ohio, to team up with Dan Auerbach of the
Black Keys and record in his newly built studio, equipped with
vintage gear. The result is everything one would expect, and
more. The "blues groove monsters" deliver another
blues/soul/rock masterpiece of gothic proportions. Worth
mentioning is a guest appearance by Ralph Carney on horns,
best known for his long-time association with Tom Waits.
Gravel-throated singer James Leg harbors a demi-doom perhaps
due to having to hold together everything but the drums. He
may be the only current broken blues carnival barker who heard
John Lee Hooker long before Captain Beefheart or Tom Waits, or
Man Man for that matter, and has yet to use a beard as
evidence of purity-what with purity being something gutter
boozers should rarely be concerned with. The razor-stabbed
organ-fueled gutter-gospel, "Oh, Sinnerman," actually exudes
some of the tempo meander of a rambling church sermon, but the
sparse sound of a graveyard Bassholes kin.- Eric Davidson /
CMJ "With a sound that's blues-rooted but steeped in Stooges
sludge, the Heavies' cranky, cranked-up sets burn black as
tire fires. Stylistically, BDH is often lumped in with R.L.
Burnside and Tom Waits. That's a fine place to start, but the
comparison misses the band's joy and boogie. Instead, think
Exile on Main Street recorded in Howlin' Wolf's casket.
Nothing smooth or clean here. Just eight-bar skronk in bad
need of a tetanus shot." - The Pitch "Their attack of drums
and keyboards is a mean, f-ed up, gospel punky hybrid and
rocks with ragged, soulful passion. - Rock Sound "Tom Waits

TECHNICAL SPACE COMPOSERS CREW
(Pre Can) The
project name for a one-off collaboration between Can's bass
player Holger Czukay and the painter Rolf Dammers. Canaxis 5
(1969) was an early attempt at manipulating ethnic music
(World music), in many ways predating the discreet background
music of certain ambient Brian Eno albums. The album was made
using tape loops from traditional Vietnamese music to create
some kind of 'acoustic sound painting'. The result was a
strange sound milage. It contained only two tracks:
"Boat-Woman-Song" and "Canaxis". Few ordinary instruments were
in use, only Holger's bass can be heard occasionally.
Nowadays, this album is nothing more than a curiosity,
documenting the ambient music in its' early childhood.
Czukay's tape editing skills steadily improved through the
years - as proved by the mid-period Can albums and even more
so on his solo albums. |

A really
unique little record from Herbie Hancock -- one that's almost
completely improvised over Latin percussion! The setup is
quite spare -- and quite different than Herbie's other Blue
Note work -- and the group features improvised backgrounds by
bassist Paul Chambers and 2 Latin percussionists, Willie Bobo
and Osvaldo "Chihuahau" Martinez. Herbie only wrote simple
sketches for the songs on the album, and most of the work on
the tracks was done live, spontaneously, in the studio --
creating a very free groove that never goes too far out, but
which is far more adventurous than usual. All tracks are long,
and titles include "Succotash", "Triangle", and "Mimosa".

You", a sweet mellow ballad that's extremely catchy, plus the
moog-based funky instrumental "Gettin It On", a totally great
number that often gets overlooked -- and the cuts "Love Oh
Love", "As Long As There's Love Around", and "Time Brings On A
Change". Solid, mellow soul from Chicago in the seventies,
with a sweet soul vibe, and great Curtom production.

is on bass and Philly Joe Jones is on drums. Two great Shorter
originals -- "Mama G" and "Sydney", plus "What Know" by
Morgan, and "Wrinkles" by Kelly. (Gold label pressing with
deep groove, in a cover with Kelly Great mis-spelled Kelley

excited to be introducing my new lead guitarist, Chris
Broderick, to the world. I have always felt lucky to have had
top shredders in that position, but after touring with Chris
in support of my last album, I couldn't wait to get into the
studio and see what he could do." Musically and lyrically Dave
Mustaine remains metals true iconoclast whose latest musical
offering rumbles with the intensity his career has been built

creating that great sense of surprise that makes their best
work so great, and keeping things fresh even when a bit more

innovative. Thankfully, both You Made Me Realise and Feed Me
With Your Kiss (the band's other Isn't Anythingsingle) aren't
as difficult to find as their earlier work -- betweenthe two
of them, there's practically an album's worth of work. Each
ofthe five tracks on this EP are worth hearing -- standouts

An amazing set
from altoist Sonny Red -- a player who hardly ever got to make
any albums as a leader, and who really burns brightly on this
Blue Note classic! Red's got a tone on alto that's as deep and
sharp as most tenorists of his generation -- extremely
soulful, but with a really raspy edge that's almost modern at
times -- a combination that's quite unique, and which makes
his playing on a few key albums well worth tracking down. This
album's one of the best of Sonny's few dates on record -- and
it features the saxophonist working with two different groups
-- both headed by Wynton Kelly on piano, and with either Sam
Jones or Paul Chambers on bass, and either Roy Brooks or Jimmy
Cobb on drums -- a hell of a great rhythm lineup, no matter
how you slice it! Both groups are right on the money, and the
whole album swings very nicely -- and titles include "Alone

A stone killer
from organist Lonnie Smith -- one of his completely cooking
early albums for Blue Note, and a hard-burner all the way
through! Smith's working here with a really great group that

almost make the set feel like one of those classic Prestige
jammers from the same time. But added to them is a great horn
section of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Julian Preister on trombone,
and Bennie Maupin on tenor -- all of whom give the record a
slightly hipper, more modern feel -- in keeping with the Blue
Note groove of the time. Tracks are all nice and long -- and
titles include the originals "Turning Point" and "Slow High"

Despite the
production's rough edges, the limited budget that fostered it,
and the feeling that it sounds more like several A-sides and a
couple decent B-sides thrown together than a singular body,
Jeopardy is a caustic jolt of a debut that startles and
fascinates. With the plaintive intro of the rhythm section, a
spidery guitar, and incidental synth wobbles (which all sounds
surprisingly Neu!-like), "I Can't Escape Myself" begins the
album unassumingly enough until reaching the terse, one-line
chorus that echoes the title of the song; suddenly, from out
of the blue, all the instruments make a quick, violent,
collective stab and retreat back into the following verse as
singer Adrian Borland catches his breath. The reverb placed on
his voice is heightened at just the right moments to
exacerbate the song's claustrophobic slant. The ecstatic
onward rush of "Heartland" forms the back end of a dynamic
one-two opening punch, with a charging rhythm and blaring
keyboards leading the way. It seems to be the spawn of XTC and
U2, just as giddy as something from the former (think Go 2)
and almost as anthemic as something from the latter (think
Boy). Much later on, near the end, "Unwritten Law" comes along
as one of the Sound's best mid-tempo mood pieces - one of
their greatest strengths. It also shows how much a simple
shading of synth can affect a song, as it affects it with a
melancholic smear that no other instrument could possibly
provide. In all honesty, they weren't breaking any new ground
here. Their influences were just as apparent as the ones
donned by the other bands who inhabited similar post-punk
territory. Smart journalists of the time - meaning the ones
who truly listened and were aware of the band's past - knew
well enough that the Sound belonged in the same league as the
bands they were compared to and not somewhere in the bushes.
Hardly coattail jockeying, the Sound were developing and
growing alongside them. If you're thinking this sounds like
someone's telling you that you need Jeopardy just as much as
you need Kilimanjaro or Unknown Pleasures or Crocodiles,
you're right again. |

Recorded live
in 1975 at Cleveland's legendary jazz club, the Smiling Dog
Saloon, when Sun Ra and his Arkestra descended on the city for
a week-long residency. You can imagine how the uninitiated's
jaw must have dropped when Ra and his 15 musicians marched out
onto the stage decked in glittery space costumes, playing
percussion instruments and chanting. This high quality live
performance is top-shelf Ra playing a kind of spaced out world
music with hints of disco. Ra sings, plays the Moog, piano and
organ, while everyone else plays alternately some kind of
percussion or reed instrument, sings, dances, and claps hands.

Recorded live in New York in 1973 with a 25-piece
Arkestra, "What Planet Is This?" comes from a time when Sun Ra
had just exploded onto the wider music scene, touring all over
Europe, and even teaching a class at the University of
California called "The Black Man In The Cosmos", where Ra was
given a chance not only to teach about music, but also his
world-view which, in some ways, was not unlike that of the
hippies. Although many get caught up in his stagey esotericism
and claims that he was from another planet, perhaps it can all
be read as a simple code message to others to be anyone you
want to be, regardless of race, or indeed, planet. Highlights
of this recording include the ten-minute full-blown "Love In
Outer Space", featuring unfettered organ, horns and a
wall-of-sound approach to percussion, and the wild and
whirling "Shadow World". In fact, Ra is at his best when he
takes his audience by storm, pulling out all the stops as he
does so masterfully on this rare performance with a 25-piece
arkestra, one of his largest ever! |

Stanley
Turrentine's no spoiler here -- as his tenor sax soars out
over the top of some sweet larger group arrangements from Duke
Pearson -- all awash in a great sense of soul, joy, and life!
The album's got a much brighter feel than you might guess from
the cover -- a vibe that's a bit similar to Stan's classic
Joyride album, but a bit more open and free -- thanks to the
lyrical touches of Pearson on the charts. Other players
include Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone,
James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Pepper Dadams on
baritone sax -- plus rhythm from McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob
Cranshaw on electric bass, Mickey Roker on drums, and Joseph
Rivera on percussion. As on some of the other Pearson dates
from the time -- particularly those with Donald Byrd -- the
use of electric bass really opens things up, by creating a
subtle rhythmic pulse that really drives most numbers along.
And also in the Pearson mode, the added players aren't really
a horn section in the conventional way -- just a group of
like-minded, top-shelf jazz players who egg on the main
soloist with a great sense of enthusiasm for the music!

of Harry Smith's work can not be overstated. Not only did he
single-handedly save much of American folk music from
extinction, but when he handed his record collection over to
Smithsonian folkways in 1952, he opened the floodgates for the
American folk revival of the following decade. Not since John
and Alan Lomax had anyone paid so much attention to saving the
American folk song from extinction, but unlike the Lomaxes,
Smith was not a government worker armed with a tape recorder,
he was just a guy from Portland, Oregon armed with a love of
music and an insatiable curiosity. So, when the U.S. Armed
Forces began melting down old records to be used as shellac
during WWII, Smith kicked into high gear, buying up as many
old 78s from the '20s and '30s as he could find. Much of the
music found here then comes from a time before
television--arm-in-arm with rock & roll--began beaming its
über-culture into every household in America, erasing much of
what had grown up locally. Prior to WWII, America was in many
ways no more than a patchwork of territories, with distinct
local cultures and musical traditions reaching both far into
the immigrant past of each area's inhabitants, but also into a
future firmly rooted in the newness and adventure of life on
this new continent. And the "social music" that grew up in
this time period was both "social" in the sense of "social
gathering" (barn dances, religious gatherings, etc.), but also
in the sense of "social issues" (labor rights, migration,
money troubles, etc.). Their music was, therefore, a
reflection of their lives, serving both as respite from their
troubles (these were desperate times: the dust bowl, the
depression, tenement housing, sweat shops, etc., were all part
of the these people's everyday lives), but also as a vehicle
for their discontent. |

5 American GI??s in cold war Germany who billed themselves as
the anti-Beatles; they were heavy on feedback, nihilism and

industrial, heavy metal, punk and techno music. The
genre-overlapping documentary film not only illustrates the
