Barranquilla's Pete Vicentini has won the respect and admiration of salsa
aficionados for his long career and artistic quality as musical director,
composer, bassist, pianist and arranger. Although his group El Afrocombo did
not have the overwhelming commercial success of Fruko y sus Tesos, Joe Arroyo
y La Verdad or Grupo Niche during the height of Colombian salsa, they enjoyed
a popular following in the Atlantic and Caribbean coastal areas of Colombia.
"Pan Con Salsa" (1971) was their excellent debut LP. Most of its
cuts are in the salsa genre, but the album also includes Vicentini's native
costeño rhythms like cumbia and porro, a funky boogaloo cover of Tito
Puente's 'Oye cómo va', Puerto Rican style bomba, and the title track,
composed by Vicentini, which is a frenetic descarga (jam session) with lots
of tasty brass solos, in-the-pocket piano tumbaos (riffs) and break-neck
percussion work-outs. The record has its own lively 'combo' sound in the
plucky brass section (two trumpets and two saxes), plus the always bright and
happy piano stylings of Willy Newball and of course the prominent bass
playing, expert direction and arrangements of Vicentini. Presented in
facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. Part of Vampisoul's reissue

Pedro "Ramayá" Beltrán, born in Patico, a small town in Colombia's
Bolívar province, is a maestro of Colombian folkloric music known as the King
of the 'caña de millo' flute, although he is also proficient in various
percussion instruments as well as the reed instrument known as 'gaita'. He
founded La Cumbia Moderna de Soledad in the early 1970s. With this group he
set out to "modernize" the folkloric music of his people, adding
electric bass and a brass section to fresh arrangements of cumbias, porros,
fandangos, puyas and other coste;o genres. "La Clavada" (1979) was La Cumbia Moderna de
Soledad's sixth record and first for Codiscos' Coste;o imprint. The LP has
many excellent examples of Beltrán's inventive mix of the ancient and the
modern, making for a collection of tunes brimming with tradition and yet
fearlessly bristling with innovation, not the least of which is ,Crees que
soy sexy', with its gaita refrain mimicking the main melody of Rod Stewart's
international disco smash 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy'. The album's title song was
a massive hit in Colombia and has become a standard of the genre. Restored to
its original glorious sound, this LP is poised to be rediscovered as an
innovative yet rootsy gem. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g

Pianist Roberto de la Barrera was arguably the first musician from Cartagena,
Colombia to record music that would later be labeled "tropical" and
"salsa" with his own group in the early to mid/1960s. He took the
piano seat in the Discos Fuentes house orchestra and was also an arranger on
several releases. In 1970 he recorded his third album for the label, "Se
formó la salsa", featuring an irresistible mix of Colombian and Cuban
flavors, sometimes within the same tune, and often with that wonderful raw,
loose, improvisational quality associated with the "descarga" jam
sessions of Cachao and others a decade before. Roberto de la Barrera was a
pioneer in introducing modern Latin sounds from Havana, New York and San
Juan. Sadly, his contributions in bringing salsa to the Caribbean region of
Colombia and hence the rest of the country have gone largely unheralded, but
hopefully this reissue will help set things straight. Presented in facsimile

Along with Speakers, Flipper's, Beatniks, Ampex and Streaks, The Silver
Thunders were responsible for one of the most exciting chapters of the early
rock years in Bogotá, Colombia. Eccentric and volcanic, the quartet recorded
an album in 1968 which wasn't released at the time. Rescued from old cassette
tapes, that recording finally comes out five decades later, displaying the
rebel spirit of a group influenced by Mersey beat, surf and garage. "Me
gritan melenudo" contains 'Alma agobiada', their only original
composition, plus raw covers of The Beatles, The Monkees, The Troggs, Lovin'
Spoonful, Miriam Makeba and The Ventures. It also includes two more Beatles
songs and a couple of covers from the Wild In The Street soundtrack recorded
in 1970 by Los Yoguis, as the group was known at the end of their short-lived

"When you Stop Loving Me" was a 45 for Thee Headcoats on Sub Pop
Records in the '90s. In my view it's a top tune that hasn't been played live
for going on 20 years so we took this opportunity to re-introduce it.
"My Love Was Felled" this track nearly made it onto the new LP but
didn't fir the running order I wanted. "Hurt Me" is a great track
by Thee Headcoatees. For some reason I never sang a version. I decided to
travel back in time and give it a shot. In my view i do a great job!
"Pretend" is another track of Thee Headcoatees that I thought we
could have a shot at. Despite being brought up on Sgt. Pepper and the Jimi
Hendrix Experience we don't record much psychedelic stuff but here's our
splendid rendition of another hit tune.

The avant-garde composer and conductor Pierre Boulez was a titan of post/War
experimental classical music. Born in the small cheesemaking town of
Montrbrison in central France in 1925, Boulez studied at the Paris
Conservatoire with the composer and organist Charles Messiaen and received
private tuition from pianist Andrée Vaurabourg, after moving to the Marais
district in 1945, he briefly studied with Schoenberg disciple, René
Leibowitz, and further influence came from immersion in Balinese gamelan,
Japanese classical music and African drumming, among other sources. Earning
money by playing an early electronic keyboard called the ondes Martenot on
theatre productions, Boulez soon became music director of the Renaud-Barrault
theatre company (led by actor/direction Jean-Louis Barrault and his actor
wife, Madeleine Renaud), leading to tours of Belgium, Switzerland, Britain
and both North and South America. American composer John Cage became an ally,
though they subsequently clashed over Cage's commitment to the role of chance
in his compositions, paving the way for an intense and lasting friendship
with the German composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, who arrived in Paris in 1952
to study with Messiaen. In July of that year, the pair attended the
International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt, leading to contact
with Italian composer Luciano Berio and other noteworthy figures. Then, in
1954, with backing from Barrault and Renaud, Boulez began staging a series of
concerts of experimental music at the Petit Marigny theatre, titled Le
Domaine musical. The pieces collected on this album are all taken from
performances staged for the 1957 Domaine musical season, beginning with Berio's
"Serenata I," conducted by Boulez, which debuted in Paris in March
of that year, arranged for flute and fourteen instruments, Berio said that
the idea behind the piece was for the solo flute to be confronted by
continuously interchanging elements, rather than mere accompaniments or
oppositions. Boulez's own "Sonatine," composed in 1946 for flute
and piano, is a 12-tone piece that evidences Messiaen's influence, with
shades of Asian classical music in places, then, Stockhausen's monumental "Zeitmasze"
or "Time Measures," a serial composition for five woodwinds, played
in different combinations of tempos and speed, was partly inspired by
Webern's principles of homogenous and harmonic textures. Finally, Messiaen's
1949 work "Cantéyodjayâ," delivered by pianist Yvonne Loriod, takes
it shape from the classical Hindu rhythms of ancient India, as with much of
the composer's oeuvre.

Fabienne Delsol's album 'Four' is a culmination of a year or so's activity at
Toerag studios. The big change this time around is the co-production by
Fabienne alongside Luke Oldfield, himself a long-time engineer and producer
at Toerag. Though swathed in the same toil and tears of her previous three
solo albums, 'Four' has a more nuanced and mature sound, rooted in psych
whilst retaining some snappy French pop and '60s garage styles of auld. There
is also a mass of complimentary instruments, in particular the Mellotron is a
welcome and worthy addition to many of the tracks.

Sealed Records release the complete remastered ICONOCLAST Discography
including the immense self released 1983 Demo, The Flipside 7" from 1985
plus Two Compilation tracks. It's a small but perfectly formed discography
and one that 36 years after it was first recorded still has power, intensity
and rage. ICONOCLAST were part of the early 80's American peace punk scene
that included CRUCIFIX, BODY COUNT, AGAINST, ANOTHER DESTRUCTIVE SYSTEM,
DIATRIBE, ARMISTICE and A STATE OF MIND. Idealistic bands highly influenced
by CRASS which shined amongst the heavily nihilistic California Punk scene of
the era. ICONOCLAST sound was in tune with DISCHARGE, early ANTISECT or
WRETCHED while lyrically the songs were political and to the point. They
played benefits for animal rights, anti nuclear, anti apartheid, anti police
brutality, and Big Mountain. The demo was followed by their only vinyl
release on Flipside which has two ragers and the more mellow In These Times
which has a touch of THE MOB and OMEGA TRIBE about it. The band had tracks on
various compilations including the seminal International P.E.A.C.E. Benefit LP
on R Radical in 1984 which had the cream of the crop of international
hardcore punk of the heyday. 'Domination Or Destruction' comes housed in a
heavy reverse board sleeve and includes a 24 page 11"x11" booklet
containing interviews, photos and flyers from the era documented, 1983-1985,
which will help understanding the band ideas and the local scene of the era.

MOVE AND DANCE
The British composer, musician and audio engineer Daphne Oram was a
pioneering figure in the use of electronic music. Coming to prominence
through her work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, which she co-founded,
Oram was one of the first British composers to feature electronic instruments
in her work and has been rightly hailed as helping musique concrete to become
accepted in Britain. Born in 1925 and raised in rural Wiltshire, close to
Stonehenge and the ancient stone circle at Avebury, Oram eschewed a place at
the prestigious Royal College of Music to take a junior engineering role at
the BBC in 1942, she was often tasked with creating sound effects, leading to
cut-up experiments with tape recorders and the development of synthetic
sound, her composition Still Point, involving two orchestras, two turntables
and five microphones, was deemed too radical by the BBC, though she was
promoted to studio manager in 1950, leading to the gradual introduction of
electronic music and musique concrete techniques on BBC soundtracks. In 1957,
she composed the music for the play Amphitryon 38, using a sine wave
oscillator and homemade filters, and this and other subsequent works led to
the establishment of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop the following year, but Oram
soon tired of the conservative constraints of the BBC, leading to her
resignation in 1959 to pursue her own vision at the Oramics Studios for
Electronic Composition, located in Tower Folly, a former hop kiln located at
Fairseat, near the village of Wrotham in rural Kent. Oramics was a radical
sound composition technique that sought to transform images to music, enacted
by drawing onto 35mm film, which would then be read by photo-electric cells,
in addition to its use in Radiophonic Workshop material, Oramics was also
employed for sound installations, theatre productions and feature films, such
as The Innocents, though financial pressures forced Oram to seek a range of
commercial engagements in addition to creating her own artistic works. The
Listen Move And Dance series of BBC programmes were devised as a radical new
technique to help British schoolchildren learn how to dance, on the LP
releases, Vera Gray arranged short adaptations of classical pieces by Bartok,
Stravinsky, Shostakovich and others, designed for "stamping, punching,
kicking and jumping" movements, as well as "running lightly,
dancing on toes" and "shaking all about," which contrasted
sharply with Oram's electronic abstractions, which seemed to have been beamed
in from outer space.

ELECTRONIQUE DU NIGER
Mamman Sani Abdoulaye, a legendary name amongst Niger-s avant garde, presents
a singularly unique recording of minimalist organ music from the Sahara.
Dreamy and hypnotic, the sound is unlike anything coming out of West Africa
before or since, closer in effect to early electronic experiments of
Kraftwerk. Recorded in 1981 at the National Radio in Niger, shortly after
Mamman discovered an old Italian organ, the album was a spontaneous
production, recorded in two takes. It was released on cassette but was a
commercial failure, and only a handful were sold. The recordings, however,
were a success, and became the themes to the National radio for the
subsequent 30 years, securing Mamman's place in the foundation of Nigerien
music. Rediscovered in a cassette archive in Niger and digitized on a
portable recorder, "La Musique Electronique Du Niger" was reissued
in 2013 on limited vinyl. Now restored and remastered from the original tape
material by Jessica Thompson.

The music of Sis' debut album Euphorbia is an experiment in soulful R&B
romantics with an undercurrent of in-studio risk. Sis began as a spontaneous
shedding&sculpting session of songwriting and recording between former
folkie Gillespie Mason, with a handful of her compositions begun on the OP-1
synth and at the piano, and engineer&producer Rob Shelton. Mason fell in
love with the OB 6 synth which features heavily, and was encouraged by
producer Shelton, a longtime engineer at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco and
Oakland, to integrate 808s into the music. From there, the spectres of Steve
Reich, Frank Ocean, Radiohead, Kate Bush, D'Angelo, Amy Winehouse and
Fleetwood Mac began to seep into the making. While a disparate array of
influences materializes on the record, something truly new is created from
each player's musical lineage. Their first album Euphorbia was born in a slow
frenzy of true experimentation and joyful discernment.

SOMALI CITY
As you'd expect from its position and history, the eastern African nation of
Somalia is rich in cultural influences. Wrapped part way around Ethiopia, it
forms the sea coast of the Horn of Africa. Kenya borders it to the south, and
its north coast faces the southern shore of the Arabian peninsula, only a
couple of hundred miles away. Unsurprisingly, given this last fact, Somalia
was one of the first African countries converted to Islam, in the 8th and 9th
centuries. During the 18th and 19th century, the Somali ports were controlled
by Arabs and by the Ottoman Empire. During the European colonial period, the
north was a British, and the south an Italian, colony. Independent Somalia
still shows varying effects of these influences (Arabic, English and Italian
are all used for teaching). Musically speaking, Somalia forms part of an
eastern African Islamic continuum that includes the coast of Kenya and Tanzania
as well as Sudan, and is more loosely linked with North and Muslim West
Africa. (Kismayu, in the south of Somalia, is in fact the most northerly
frontier of the Swahili music called -taarab- or -tarabu-). But like all the
other idioms in this general Afro-Islamic nexus, Somalia's music retains a
quite individual flavor. The main traditional instrument of Somalia is the
-ud-, imported from Egypt or Lebanon and known locally as the -kaban-.
Another common instrument is the -taruumbo-, or flute. The one heard on
several of these tracks was a homemade, end-blown version cut from a piece of
plastic tubing. As is true for the whole of Africa, the standard six-string
acoustic guitar has been taken over by Somali musicians and played in a wide
range of styles. Small keyboard instruments have also long been a feature of
East African coastal music. In the old days, portable harmoniums were
popular. These were presumably imported from India, where they are very
popular. In Somalia, the market has been captured by Japanese-made organs
with built-in rhythm, like the one heard on four tracks here. The music on
this album was all recorded in one town, Baraawe (usually called Brava on the
maps). Baraawe, which is on the Somali coast about 120 miles south of the
capital, Mogadishu, has a population of around 10,000. Like all African towns
of any size it is something of a melting pot. The original inhabitants, like
the Swahili to their south, are of mixed Arab and Bantu African heritage, and
speak a Bantu language called Chimina. Somalis from various other areas,
speaking standard Somali and several dialects of it, also live in Baraawe.
The musicians heard here play regularly together in various combinations.
Like almost all African musicians, they are part-timers. Some are shoemakers.
Two are soldiers (Africa has long had an amazing number of fine dance bands
made up of police or army personnel). All the pieces they perform on this
recording are love songs.

OF THE LARYNX
The larynx or voice box is a small organ located towards the top of the neck
in humans and some other animals. Constructed largely of cartilage, it houses
the vocal folds that allow for the manipulation of pitch and volume, which
are essential for the phonation of spoken speech. It is also involved in
bringing air to the lungs when we breathe and it protects the windpipe when
we swallow. However, those unfortunate to experience the potentially fatal
malignant tumours of laryngeal cancer will have their larynx removed,
resulting in a traumatic loss of speech< thankfully, as this rare record
issued by Smithsonian Folkways in 1964 demonstrates, removal of the larynx
does not necessarily spell the end of speech for such blighted individuals.
Instead, through developments in artificial voice creation, patients could
learn to employ modes of vocal communication again. The album was recorded by
physician Harm A. Drost at the Phonetic Laboratory of the Ear, Nose and
Throat Dept of the University Hospital, Leiden, in the Netherlands, working
under the direction of Professor H. A. E. van Dishoeck. As the advances were
fairly new and surprisingly varied, Drost felt a phonograph album
demonstrating the techniques would be useful for those in the field. The
album thus features a narrator explaining aspects of several different
techniques, followed by examples of patients employing them. Buccal speech
(limited to certain consonants), parabuccal speech (collecting air in a space
between the upper jaw and the cheek), glosso-pharyngeal speech (a method
deemed obsolete where air is forced between the tongue and the palate),
esophageal voice (made by reconditioning one's esophagus via swallowing,
suction or injection), various injection techniques and devices such as the
larynxophone, pipa di tichioni and "western electric" are all
explored here, along with other aspects of the larynx and its absence. Speech
