great group of players on these oft intense takes traditional Turkish,
Armenian and Arabic songs! The melodies and rhythms are pretty impressive
-- the percussion is particularly heavy and groovy! The oud is out front
and supported by lots of clarinet and bongo, hand percussion, guitar, bass
and some vocals, too! There's a passion here that easily trumps any
initial thoughts that this would be a dry reading of middle-eastern folk
material -- it's appealing in many of the ways that Salah Ragab's Egyptian
jazz material is, without the cosmic funkiness. Players include Souren
Baronian on clarinet and bongos, Jack Chalikian on canun, John Valentine
on guitar and dudoog, among others. |

guitarists credited as the lead -- and also features a heady dose of
organ, which ties together the tunes nicely, and underscores the way that
the vocals often break between solo and harmonizing moments. The twin
guitars definitely kick things up a bit too -- tangling around each other
at more complicated, points, then unifying for a fiercely fuzzy sound.

remembered for their smartly suited, tightly riffing contributions to the
late-'70s mod revival, the Jolt were, in fact, one of the few bands who
not only straddled the divide between classic punk and that more
specialist sound, they were also the only ones who could give label- (and
genre-) mates a run for their money. Debuting in late 1977 with the
sparkling "All I Can Do" single, the Scottish band barreled through the
new year, redeveloping their sound as adroitly as Weller and company ever
did, and drawing from many of the same archetypes as well - a virtue
proven by their second single, a sterling cover of the Small Faces'
"Watcha Gonna Do About It." Punk in a parka had never sounded so fresh. By
the time of their self-titled debut album, however, the Jolt were already
consigned to dwell in the Jam's lengthening shadow, a fate that the band
themselves seemed to encourage. The best tracks on the album were those
that could have sprung from Weller's pen - and that is precisely where
they did get "See Saw," the finest song among the eight bonus tracks
appended to the Captain Oi! reissue. The B-side to Jolt's final single,
"Maybe Tonight," the song was written for the band by the Jam man himself.
But there is so much more to Jolt than an adrenalin rush of Jam-isms.
Noisy, exuberant, eminently danceable and absolutely exhilarating, Jolt is
the sound of mod at its most potently creative, a record that could have
been made in 1965, but was certainly remixed in 1978, to take into account
all that had happened since then. Even more importantly, the passing years
have chipped none of that original excitement away, and Jolt remains just
that...a welcome, thrilling jolt. |

"Infinite
Suns" begins a new era of change in THE TELECOPES music field. This LP is
the introduction to a series of new releases which will include 2 new
albums and one live recording. This new LP is a selection of analogue tape
recordings taken between 2006 and 2007, using a multi directional mic to
capture environmental response. Recording levels were set close to
saturation, allowing for interaction with the tape machine itself. Side
one closes with a piece centered around a lock-groove from the run-out of
THE TELESCOPES first album and is lock-grooved again to play endlessly.
The recording took place in a room used by a deep trance medium to hold
investigative seances. The album ends with THE TELESCOPES channelling out
on each others instruments. The sound of earthquakes dreaming, where black
holes reveal infinite suns. |

killer album of African-tinged jazz -- recorded privately by Randy Weston
in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records!
The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments -- and
at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably because
of its progressive nature -- but really flowing out with a rich Africanist
inspiration, and served up with even sharper modern edges than before! His
group here includes Big Black on congas, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Ray
Copeland on trumpet -- and Copeland also arranged all the tracks,
transforming a few older numbers with the bolder spirit of the session.
