PERRERA - LA MAKETA 1989
Spanish punk
band from Buenavista (San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa). Their style was a
Detroit-style, urgent and abrasive punk rock. La Perrera was formed in 1987
by Jimmy Díaz (drums), Xabi Garre (guitar), Mikel Serrano (bass), Gonzalo
Ibáñez (vocals) and Arturo Ibáñez (guitar), and it was based in the
Buenavista squat locals. In the late eighties the main punk scene, the
so-called Rock Radikal Vasco was in decline, and a new generation of young
bands with different music referents took up the torch. Among them, one of
the most influential was La Perrera. Now, their first demo, for the first
time on vinyl.

Our "New
Adventures In Pop" collection came about as a way to give voice to new
artists whose projects captivated Elefant Records (PAPA TOPO, TRONCO, DIE KATAPULT,
AXOLOTES MEXICANOS...). But sometimes, some groups spread so quickly online
and on social networks, and their songs and messages have such an impact that
when their first songs are officially released, they are already really well
known. They've already been applauded by the media and stalked by the most
unconditional fans. Such is the case with Chenta Tsai Tseng, better known as
PUTOCHINOMARICON (CHINK FAG). A migrant originally from China, he is an
architect, a musician, an activist, and a unique, inimitable character in
love with pop culture from recent decades. Interviews in El País, La Sexta, El Confidencial, FantasticPlastic, Radio
3. Concerts where
the audience goes crazy and songs that are authentic protest anthems for new
generations. These have been his first steps in the music world. Yes, like we
are saying, this is his first record label release, but he has thousands of
views on YouTube and has already given us so much to talk about. Some places
actually say he is an "influencer" because of how intense his
Instagram activity is. Some people will already be gritting their teeth.
That's when PUTOCHINOMARICON rubs his hands together and sharpens his quill.
His thing is to break down preconceptions and along these lines we already
know before we start that our words are going to fall short.

Baboon Show released their 7th Album with the title ,The World Is Bigger Than
You". Although their last release ,Damnation" was just 2 years ago
and the band had played several tours all over Germany and Scandinavia, the
,The World Is Bigger Than You" is their most ambitious and elaborate
release yet and so you can find some of the best songs in the history of the
band on this record. Maybe it was the spirit of the INGRID Studios in
Stockholm, which exists since the 60s and already recorded some albums with
ABBA, maybe it was the collaboration with Pelle Gunnerfeldt who produced 7
out of the 11 songs of the album, maybe it was just the simple fact that the
band worked harder and longer than ever before on their songs. Besides their
own unmistakable pieces, it is the last song of the album ,Lost You In A
Secon" which is the most outstanding one. This song was written by Björn
Dixgård *Mando Diao( for the band and he insisted to sing it with Cecilia. An
extraordinary duet and the perfect ending for the album. No, The Baboon Show
are no secret hint any more and they developed an considerable amount of
attention through their outstanding good live appearances, no matter if it
was as headliner or as a guest of Donots, Pascow or Die Toten Hosen. The
future will show to which ways the band is heading, ,The World Is Bigger Than
You" in any case is a plain and pure punkrockalbum with great
songwriting and the potential to a classic piece.

and the title track in their own trademark style. Most interesting are the

1974. the Cosmic Jokers were basically Klaus Schulze, Manuel Göttsching,
various Ash Ra Tempel and Wallenstein members doing late night jamming.
Galactic Supermarket is one of them, and is more rock-oriented than many
others. It's no surprise the music bears more than a passing resemblance to
Ash Ra Tempel, because of Manuel Göttsching and his guitar playing. Also
Jürgen Dollase gives some nice keyboard work, particularly the piano, Farfisa
electric piano, synths, and even a little Mellotron. Klaus Schulze were more
responsible for the more droning organ and synth end of things, it's pretty
obvious when he plays it. The legendary producer Dieter Dierks plays Bass on
these nearly never ending improvisation. The recording was transferred from the
original analog tapes at the Dierks Studios in Germany. And carefully
remastered for an incredible result. Released on the label 'Kosmische
Kuriere' (Cosmic Couriers)

The album is described this way by producer Ripley Johnson: "The band
was aiming to capture a timeless, natural sound, not quite of the present,
past, or future, but phasing in between the consciousness of now and the
stoned dream-state of the eternal. Sort of a back porch jam just as the
shrooms are starting to kick in. Handmade and human, but also cosmic and
transcendental. The goal is to let the music speak for itself and hopefully
find a weird and wonderful audience somewhere out there." That
description feels right for an album which seems perfect for those soft
ephemeral moments, and that softly wraps you in the feeling of walking at
twilight. Mellow but upbeat the album it's easy to imagine the leaves
changing colours. It's psych rock, and difficult to describe without getting
poetic: dreamy and insular, it's easy to get lost in this album. Produced and
recorded by Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips), and mixed by Chris
Cohen (Captured Tracks, Deerhoof), the album finds its niche in the hazy
sonic landscape of private press country and psych records, and alongside
artists like Relatively Clean Rivers, Jim Sullivan, Kenny Knight , and
countless other explorers of the pastoral underground.

Originally released to capitalise on the success of Scott/Heron's
then/current hit ¶he Bottle' and his subsequent signing to Arista, this 1974
compilation has since become the definitive distillation of his early work.
Contained within the original 11/track selection were the title track, hitey
On The Moon', ome Is Where The Hatred Is' plus eight more. The expanded CD
version offers a more rounded view of Scott/Heron's work with the addition of
nine tracks among them hen You Are Who You Are', used in a recent television
commercial, Think I'll Call It Morning' and the original spoken/word version
of ¶he Revolution Will Not Be Televised'. By way of a bonus, edited versions
of several of his poems are also included. Replicating the original 11/track
running order and packaged in a heavy duty sleeve, the vinyl reissue features
the original LP's inner gatefold artwork on the inner bag.

SWANN, BETTYE - THE MONEY MASTERS

The talented Bettye Swann scored an R^B hit with on't Wait Too Long', her
catchy, self/penned, debut single for Money records in 1965. She seemed to
have a bright future but the Motownesque ¶he Man That Said No' follow/up did
not chart, nor did the tougher/sounding ¶he Heartache Is Gone'. However
Money's perseverance paid off when yet another self/written number ake Me
Yours', pressed all the right commercial buttons and spent two weeks at the
top of the R^B charts in 1967. The song was covered by Z Z Hill and Spencer
Wiggins and is an established 60s soul classic. Swann wrote nearly all her
own songs at Money, except a cover of the Temptations' on't Look Back' and an
exquisite rendition of Sam Cooke's Change Is Gonna Come' which was on her
"Make Me Yours" LP and is featured here. An LP was scheduled after
the first hit, on't Wait Too Long', but was shelved when the follow/ups
failed. That album contained the previously unheard ¶he Dance Is Over' and a
faster version of Think I'm Falling In Love' compared to the later single<
both are deserved inclusions here. The momentum from Swann's big hit carried
over to all In Love With Me' which also charted, but the next 45 was that cover
of on't Look Back' which did not add enough to the Temptations' version to
earn many sales. Far better was the urgent and unusual on't Take My Mind'
which featured mature lyrics but was not far out enough to join in the black
psychedelic success of the time. After Money, Swann moved to Capitol, Fame
and Atlantic but her song/writing on these releases dwindled and then ceased.
This LP is testament to her song/writing as well as her vocal skills.

2015 was the year jazz hit the mainstream again. The catalyst for this was
saxophonist Kamasi Washington's 3CD masterpiece "The Epic",
influenced by the symphonic, spiritually aware jazz of the early 70s.
"Celestial Blues" is a compilation that shines a spotlight on some
of the music that may have influenced "The Epic". The ten tracks
range from the evidently spiritual - such as Gary Bartz's classic elestial
Blues' or Joe Henderson ^ Alice Coltrane's astounding collaboration on ire',
to less obvious but just as relevant recordings by drummers Roy Brooks and
Joe Chambers. Charles Earland's contribution bears a remarkable resemblance
to enrietta Our Hero' a stand/out track from "The Epic", whilst
Carlos Garnett and Azar Lawrence's mix of saxophone, strings and voices could
be a template for Washington's whole sound. The compilation is completed by
fine examples of the era's jazz from Hampton Hawes and Bayeté Umbra Zindiko.

In 1979, Spring
Records released the first hip-hop style rap record ing Tim III (Personality
Jock)' by The Fatback Band. The label, initially relegated it to the B-Side,
allowed the Sugarhill Gang the breakthrough rap hit with 'Rapper's Delight'.
Over the next decade, Spring kept dipping their toes in the water, but
without any great conviction or mainstream success but were always there to
chart hip-hop's development. "Dollar Bill Y'All" focuses on all the
key moments and includes personality jocks like Mr. Magic, street tough
rapping, live funk bands and the birth of sampling. This compilation is a
detailed compilation looking at Spring Records' - and sub-label Posse - long
and sometimes troubled relationship with hip-hop's first decade. "Dollar
Bill Y'All" shows that, despite their reservations, Spring recorded
landmark records by not just King Tim III, but Jimmy Spicer, DJ Hollywood nd
Ice T (as part of Afrika & The Zulu Kings). Extended sleeve notes, penned
by Dean Rudland, tells the story of how the label could have been a force in
the next generation of rap, possibly even signing Gang Starr, if only they
had been committed: the Bally Boys single, which now sells for hundreds of
pounds, was produced by Donald Dee Bowden who produced Gang Starr's debut
single 'The Lesson'.

variety of tiny scenes in the southwest side of Louisiana - and the result is

Bob Thiele is
one of the great producers. For his work with John Coltrane alone, where he
gave free reign to the saxophone great-s wildest musical visions including
"A Love Supreme", ignoring the usual cost consciousness of a major
label, he deserves to be lauded. In addition to this, his eight years at
Impulse! saw him recording seminal works by scores of musicians including
late-blooming masterpieces by Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, and a whole
wave of 'new thing' jazzers such as Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders. He
didn-t stop there and when he launched his own label, Flying Dutchman in
1969, he continued to innovate and record music that reflected its times, but
that also resonates down through the ages. It is to Flying Dutchman that we
are paying tribute on this compilation.
