QUINTET were originally formed for an afterparty celebrating the New York
City premiere of AMPHETAMINE REPTILE documentary THE COLOR OF NOISE. "It
was obvious I must assemble a supergroup of the finest noise rockers New York
City had to offer . . ." says Spasm. First choice was basher
extraordinaire "BLOODY" RICH HUTCHINS, veteran of such explosive
musical exports as LIVE SKULL, OF CABBAGES AND KINGS and RUIN. Next, SKELETON
BOY of WOMAN was recruited. "Who, just as LEADBELLY was the King Of The
Twelve-String Guitar, is himself The King Of The Two-String Bass." Then
came the twang, with the addition of suave slinger ANDREA SICCO of TWIN GUNS.
"When our guitars merge, it forms a most piquant aural melange." In
a nod to the latter half of his birth name, STU SPASM now became ART GRAY,
and an entirely new mess was born. THE ART GRAY NOIZZ QUINTET have recently
been witnessed onstage opening for kindred spirits such as THE SCIENTISTS and
MUDHONEY, and 2019 saw them survive a successful tour of the West Coast.
Catching the eye of No Wave Queen LYDIA LUNCH led to teaming up for a collaborative
musical effort, and sharing a few stages including bookending tha pandemic,
with one of the last shows of 2020 NYC before lockdown hit, and a triumphant

BEN, JORGE - BEM-VINDA AMIZADE
All-time classic Jorge Ben album recorded in 1981, strong from start to
finish. It combines dancefloor hits and downtempo soulful slow burners,
comprising samba funk jams and irresistible boogie and disco tracks. Funky as
Hell! Very hard to find on vinyl these days, this reissue will make many
collectors happy! Jorge Ben is someone who needs no introduction. Since his
first hits in the 60s, this artist has become one of the greatest icons of
Brazilian pop music. His anthems "Mais Que Nada" or "Pais Tropical"
are probably two of the most ever-listened Brazilian songs of all time. After
being involved in the Tropicalia movement and incorporating the influences of
Afro-American funk into his repertoire, with the support of his backing band
-Trio Mocotó-, his very personal samba sound also opened up to the new
musical trends coming from the States at the edge of the 70s. Boogie and
disco music were making headway and soon became popular in the Brazilian
market. Jorge Ben's albums recorded at the beginning of the 80s reflect this
trend and deliver a good number of outstanding tunes. "Bem-Vinda
Amizade" is one of those albums. Recorded in 1981, it is a solid album,
start to finish. It comprises the usual samba funk numbers, so characteristic
of Jorge Ben, with killer boogie and disco tracks 'Oé Oé (Faz O Carro De Boi
Na Estrada)', 'Ela Mora Em...'). And it also contains downtempo soulful slow
burners like 'Lorraine' or 'Katarina, Katarina', funky as Hell! An essential

Italian migrant relocated to Peru Luciano Luciani put together an orchestra
in 1968 which performed under the name Luciano y sus Mulatos after gaining a
name as composer in that country. His debut album "Mulata, Vamos a la
Salsa" was originally released on MAG in 1970, comprising mainly cumbias
and also guaracha, son and salsa tracks, mainly Luciani's own compositions.
This album also stands out for the vocals by guarachero Víctor Kiko Fuentes
and Benny del Solar, the star of countless Peruvian tropical music
recordings. The album also prompted Luciano Luciani's interest in the
innovative recordings coming out of Spanish Harlem in New York that would be
manifested in his later recordings for MAG in 1975. Reissued now for the
first time, over 50 years after its original release, in 180g vinyl and
including an insert with notes. RDS

For the first time on vinyl, the one considered by many as Nikki Sudden's
best album ever "Red Brocade". Featuring members of JACOBITES, THE
CHAMBER STRINGS, WILCO, etc. The original album released on gatefold cover
double LP with inner sleeves, remastered and with liner notes by Kevin Junior
(The Chamber Strings). In 1997, British musician Nikki Sudden traveled to
Chicago to work with The Chamber Strings. While there, the two parties
realized that they were creatively simpatico, and soon work began on an album,
a baker's dozen of thoughtful, occasionally introspective, and superbly
written songs, which would appear in 1999 as Red Brocade. It's mellow
singer-songwriter fare, some might call it "alt.country", and that
Wilco's Jeff Tweedy pops up here should give you a sense of what you're
getting, as sonically, all of the songs here could have been Wilco tracks.

Detroit's four Barrino Brothers first recorded for Dave Hamilton on his TCB
label in 1969. The single went largely unnoticed until all things Dave
Hamilton-related became of interest in the 90s and onwards. The record only
sold locally but the belated interest from funk fans in ust A Mistake' has
pushed the price to around the $1,000 mark for a mint copy. We've reproduced
the label, with a subtle colour switch, and put the tape find of 'The Bad
Things (You Said To Me)' on the A-side. That is a standout dance track that
has been issued before as a now-deleted Kent 45 that looks great on the label
Dave Hamilton had originally planned to release it on.

VERSATILES/CLARENCE PINCKNEY - THE INTRUDERS/JUST OUTSIDE OF LONELY
'The Intruder' has been one of the biggest finds to be played at the 100 Club
in the last three years. Writer Billy Terrell found what turned out to be a
Vigor label test pressing among his records and submitted the tracks to Kent.
We were knocked out by the ballad side, 'I'm Just Passing Time', which we
have since issued as a Deep Soul single, but it is the dance groove of 'The
Intruder' that has excited the rare soul world. Uptempo soul tracks of this
quality hardly ever turn up. The imaginative Terrell/Dahrouge song was
arranged with full orchestration by Tony Camillo but the deal with Vigor was never
finalised. The urgency of the music makes it a dancer's delight. The flip is
a Terrell solo song on another Asbury Park act - Clarence Pinckney, who
delivers the superb big ballad with panache.

WESTON - WISHFUL THINKING/IT TAKES A LOTTA TEARDROPS
Hodges, James & Smith were the mainstays of Mickey Stevenson's
post-Motown recordings and he gave them this fabulous Mikim Publishing song,
written by Vicki Basemore and the redoubtable Leon Ware. Superbly orchestrated,
after a dramatic intro, it hits an uptempo rhythm that epitomises the great
girl soul sounds of the early 70s - somewhat reminiscent of the Supremes' 'Up
The Ladder To The Roof'. Kim Weston was Mickey's most prolific solo act
throughout his career and 'It Takes A Lotta Teardrops' is another triumph for

Kent's licensing deal with Mickey Stevenson is proving to be a major musical
find. Ronnie McNeir is regarded as an absolute top-class, modern soul singer.
These tracks are from the early 70s, around the time he cut his eponymous
first LP in Los Angeles with Mickey. 'Say You' is a superb updating of the
Monitors' harmony hit from 1965 and is given the distinctive, sensitive
McNeir treatment. 'I'm Sorry' is a slow-burning song that builds into a
perfect dancefloor beat. It was penned by Ronnie and his writing partner of
the time, Andre Moore. The release is a taster of the complete, previously
unreleased album we will issue on Ronnie later this year.

reason) that it doesn't feature on Discogs and only two sales have ever been
recorded on the Popsike website, they were cheap too! We've coupled it
with another great mover, 'She's My Baby (Smokey's In Town)', which debuts on
a 45 - it was unreleased until an Ace LP way back in 1987. Two killer tracks
on a lovely Repro design of that colourful early 60s label.

Repress! To understand where Fela's musical quest began, you have to start
with his education at London's Trinity College School of Music. While his
family had sent him to England to study medicine, Fela had more musical
aspirations. After finishing school, Fela returned to Nigeria and with his
band Koola Lobitios and his star status began to flourish in his native land,
fusing the sounds of Jazz and Funk with the traditional African music he had
been raise on. EMI, his label at the time, saw the true power of his musical
creation, which he termed "afro/beat", and brought Fela and his
band back to London. The result was London Scene, Fela's first release,
recorded at Abby Road. While recording this album, Fela began his friendship
with Cream drummer Ginger Baker, who plays uncredited on the track "Egbe
Mio". London Scene is the beginning of what would become Fela's
signature "Afrobeat" style and a great introduction to the man and
his music.

music of black urban America in a 12 year period from the mid 60s. It
stretches from the gritty sophistication of soul jazz small groups, through
street funk and into the first flowerings of a new culture, called hip hop,
that would define the next phase of black music. This period was the last
time that the mainstream American music industry would allow the independent
labels to dictate the way. After this the majors would control distribution
and any label that looked like it meant business would be swallowed up.
