IN BLOOD is a great album, pretty much ignored in ope the first time around, it's subtitled 'ONE CHORD! ONE SONG! ONE SOUND!' But it's so much more than that, tracks like 'Demolition Girl' & 'Step Out' roar out of your stereo, really great dirty one chord (with many notes) blues songs with vocal trading, clanging guitars and backed by the Medway Delta Review, which features, Bruce and Johnny of Thee Headcoats as well as Johnny Gibb of the Wildebeests. While simplicity, repetition and sheer rock & roll minimalism are at the heart of the album, In Blood never ceases to hold interest. It's just plain addictive! AUDIO CLARITY | After Caetano Veloso broke out with his solo debut, the self-titled 1968 release recognized as the building block for the now infamous Brazilian Tropicalia movement, his friends and musical peers released similar albums, always upping the ante in terms of outrageousness and inventiveness. Born in 1944, his career began at teenage, with his faithful band Os Leonenses, who were mostly members of his family and shared most of his musical life; and lasted until his death on January 31st, 2019. Until the very end, he kept performing big events all around the country, and was among the very few singers and bands from Sao Tomé & Principe that recorded in Luanda Angola for N'Gola and Merengue labels in the '70s, and in Lisbon for the essential IEFE imprint in the '80s. Respected father of 27 children from four different wives, people named him "A voz do povo de Sao Tomé", the people's voice of the island, as he always made very clear his political views on internal affairs and backed since day one the revolutionary party that took power after the independence obtained from Portugal on July 12th, 1975. A powerful and free soul, expressing through his beautifully soft and deep voice range, the concerns of the poor, in this often-troubled country. His funerals were the biggest ever organized on the island, and were paid for by ex-president Pinto da Costa, gathering thousands to accompany him to his last home. His music is wonderfully rich and delicate, though quite minimalistic in arrangements, revealing the subtle melodies of the islands' harmonic and backing vocals traditions, laid on either incredibly energetic Puxa rhythms, or the sweetness of sensual Rumbas. Of mixed Indian and African/Jamaican heritage, the man born Donat Roy Mittoo was a gifted musician that played piano in the Skatalites at the age of 16. He was a very important part of reggae's evolution, having been a crucial member of the Studio One house band from its very foundation days, being employed as the main keyboardist and musical arranger for an extended period, working closely there with Lee cratch' Perry and countless other important figures, as well as relegating Leroy Sibbles to the bass. Although Mittoo migrated to Canada in the late 1960s, he frequently returned to Jamaica to record, maintaining his Studio One connection, and also issuing a sublime series of albums for Bunny Lee in the mid/1970s. Derya Yldrm and Grup imek are back with their third album Dost 2, the second of a two-part series following 2021's highly acclaimed Dost 1 (BJR 065LP). The eight-track release sees Turkish singer, balama player and multi-instrumentalist Derya Yldrm and her international band of brothers and sisters continue their psychedelic journey, meandering through Anatolian folk music and poetry with their electrifying grooves, while also delving into their own lives and personal experiences. While rooted in Anatolian tradition, Grup imek (which translates into "Ocean Lightning and the Thunderbolts", a play on Derya's surname "Yldrm", which means lightning in Turkish) draws on a boundless cosmos of sounds and builds on the contribution of each band member. Despite being multilingual, Yldrm exclusively sings in Turkish. Graham Mushnik (organ, synthesizers, and clavinet player) and Antonin Voyant (guitar, bass, and flute) are both members of London/France-based collective Catapulte Records and played in l'Orchestre du Montplaisant, a quartet known for its cinematic, retro atmospheres -- a clear influence on Grup imsek's sprawling, vintage-tinged compositions.
