We are using MunkiServer 0.6 (just did a git pull a day or so ago, actually) and Munki 0.9.0.1797, with our Mac OS X 10.8.x clients. So far, I haven't noticed any issues as we use this combination in production. However, as I look forward to planning for a possible Mavericks deployment, I'm also considering a push of a newer version of the Munki tools.

My question: how aggressively can I keep up with Munki updates when used in conjunction with MunkiServer? Should I expect issues if I deploy a version too new to work with MunkiServer? I'm thinking that the answer is: "no, however MunkiServer may not have built-in support for some of the newer functionality of Munki" but I wanted to be sure.

Hey Chris,
You've answered your own question pretty well. Assuming no major changes to past features, you should be fine to use munkiserver with newer munkitools. The only downside would be that new features would need to be managed by adding raw tags as oppose to the web GUI.

I'll add a disclaimer that before upgrading your systems, a test run is always recommended. You never know! :)

Chris,

I’ll echo Jordan’s sentiments. We’ve generally stayed up-to-date on all releases on both our clients and Munkiserver box.  I’d like to support more of the Munki client features that have been added, and have done some work toward them, but haven’t had a chance to fully test and release.  In general, Greg has fought hard to keep Munki very backward compatible and that really helps this project out.

If you do ever find problems though, please report them.
