With the Swift conversion making significant headway I wanted to purpose an updated app icon for MSC that could be rolled out at the same time the Swift migration is done.

My idea was to update the icon to match macOS's Squircle design pattern, bringing it up to date with the rest of the system.  In addition to fitting it better it would also be a clear indicator of what version the user is running (python/swift).

I'd be happy to take on the task of updating the icon with others input on what design changes (if any) we'd like to see in the icon itself.

Thank you!

Thanks for the offer.

I’m not currently considering updating the MSC icon. I’m not a fan of cramming all app icons into the boring “squircle" pattern. I think we’ve lost something there by doing that.

MSC is of course already written in Swift, and `managedsoftwareupdate` and Managed Software Center.app have always been loosely coupled. I don’t think I want to use the icon to imply something that is not necessarily true.

All that said, I’m open to the possibility of a new icon design that “knocks my socks off”, but changing the icon just to fit it into the boring “squircle” pattern is not something that interests me.

A little follow-up here. It looks like Apple is forcing the issue in macOS 26 (Tahoe). MSC's round icon gets inset inside a squircle on macOS 26. So I will be redesigning the app icon to fit in Apple's boring squircle. :-(
