I came across a small bug.

We've recently made the jump from version 7.0.10 to 7.1.1. Since then, the Munki status window no longer displays detailed information during a first boot run. During package downloads, the status window remains blank. During installation, only the generic message "Installing xx items..." is shown, with no further detail.

The affected Macs are running macOS 26.4.1. I haven't tested it yet with other macOS versions.

Attached is a screenshot showing the missing details.

I can’t reproduce this issue, With Munki 7.1.1.5696, I ran a bootstrapping session on a test Mac and observed expected behavior with the MunkiStatus application.

There have been no functional code changes in MunkiStatus between 7.0.10 and 7.1.1. (There were some code _formatting_ changes, which should have not caused any change in behavior, but there’s always a chance. However, I’m not seeing any changes).

There are no code changes at all (even formatting changes) in the code in code/cli/munki/shared/munkistatus.swift, which contains the code managedsoftwareupdate uses to send status info to MunkiStatus.app.

I’m curious if you can reproduce this problem on demand.

Manually remove some items that Munki will then reinstall (like, for example, Google Chrome and/or Firefox).

touch "/Users/Shared/.com.googlecode.munki.checkandinstallatstartup”

Log out.

Munki will now run over the loginwindow, will check for updates, download, and install. Status info should be displayed by the MunkiStatus application.

I note that you did see the "Installing xx items...” message, which _is_ sent by managedsoftwareupdate to MunkiStatus: it’s not “built-in” to MunkiStatus, which shows that at least some status messages are being sent and received…

I've seen this on Munk 7.0 as well, however in my instance it occurred on a MacBook Neo that had no WiFi or wired network connection at the login screen.

In this instance it looked like Munki was waiting for an interface; after at least 60 seconds I realised the WiFi connection hadn't occurred and plugged in a wired NIC, Munki eventually started processing content to download and install after the NIC got a DHCP lease, but there was no info about the content being downloaded same as the screen here.

I've been doing some more tests and it sure looks like the issue is caused by a missing network interface in the first seconds after boot.
I'm configuring new MacBook Airs. They're connected to ethernet using a Belkin USB-C network adapter.

My workflow:

- Boot new Mac in Recovery mode
- Install bootstrappr from a network volume, which installs Munki and sets Munki preferences and Manifest.
- Restart Mac
- Munki starts at first boot

In the logs in the attached screenshot you can see that Munki is waiting for a network connection in the first seconds.

This issue started last week at the same time I started using Munki 7.1.1. This is why I concluded the issue was caused by the new Munki version. I'm going to try to find out what's causing the delayed network connection.
