My clients are downloading the update, then they click update all and logout to update to 10.11.1 but the computer just restarts and doesn't actually install the update at all. Anyone else having this issue? We have a caching server, but not running a software update server... with all of the 10.10.x updates they worked just fine...

Thanks for the help! :)

Having the exact same issue here. Looks as if it installs, reboots, and then the update check through Managed Software Center pulls the updates again.

Never had issues before installing Apple updates using Munki.

Oddly enough, for this one, using the command-line worked fine (didn't test using the App Store):

softwareupdate --install --all

For me it also Looks like it will install, but goes WAY too quickly, then when it reboots, about this mac shows still 10.11 and then it tries to keep running the install... I don't want to have to use the command line on each machine, that's not going to work for me long term :)

You should be looking at /Library/Managed\ Installs/Logs/ManagedSoftwareUpdate.log and /var/log/install.log for clues.

The 10.11.1 update installed as expected/normally on a test machine here. It took ~10 minutes on a Mac Pro3,1 with spinning disk.

The second part doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but the first part it looks as if, though the updates did download, Munki isn't seeing the download. It's just odd, because I've never had anything like this happen before with Munki and Apple updates.

I think my problem is different from macbofh because I am finding and downloading the updates... It just won't install, this is the log from the 3rd computer I've tried... all having the same issue.

I have seen similar log messages on my own machine (current 13" Macbook Pro). I am not setting a SUS at all on this machine.

Same with me Grahm, no SUS specified, just using default apple with an in house cacheing server. Machine models I've tested are MacBook Air and iMac's same results (as I expected).

This seems to be important, though:
It’s the “resetting state” bit — it’s causing previously cached downloads to get flushed.

Do you know how we can get around this issue? I never specified a softwareupdateURL in Munki's preferences... which seems to be I think where you are going with the two links you sent. If we didn't do that, what else could cause it?

It seems quite clear that the changes in /usr/sbin/softwareupdate in El Capitan are even more extensive than previously thought.

Here’s what is working here:

Munki tools version 2.3.1.2535
No Caching Server
Local (reposado) software update server.
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL pointed to local reposado server.
/Library/Preferences/ManagedInstalls SoftwareUpdateServerURL is not defined (the key does not exist)

It seems that other combinations may have issues. It’s the community’s job help to figure them out.

My environment is:

Munki tools version 2.3.1.2535
No Caching Server
No Local (or reposado) software update server.
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL is not defined
/Library/Preferences/ManagedInstalls SoftwareUpdateServerURL is not defined

I was able to install the update in munki by pointing the CatalogURL in com.apple.SoftwareUpdate to the main Apple catalog

After a reboot i was able to install the 10.11.1 update with munki

There is a pattern forming.

It looks like this affects organizations who do not set a CatalogURL in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate; that is, they do no management of available Apple Software Updates, and just allow their managed machines to download and install updates from Apple the day they are released.

It seems a temporary workaround would be to (on El Capitan clients) use a profile or script to set the CatalogURL to https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

Will the clients still lean on the cache server if this is in place?

Available as a pkg installer here: https://munkibuilds.org/2.3.1.2546/

Or just replace /usr/local/munki/munkilib/appleupdates.py with this one: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/munki/munki/master/code/client/munkilib/appleupdates.py

I've actually had a different result. I've tested 2 machines, Both of them had not yet downloaded the apple updates so they haven't reached the point of the others that would reboot without installing the update...

My 2 machines that were test running Munki Tools 2.3.1.2546 and both of them say they are "checking Apple Software update catalog" but neither recognize or pull down the needed 10.11.1 update any other. They don't see them at all.

On the other hand as Greg suggested earlier, I created a payload free pkg and put in this work around It seems a temporary workaround would be to (on El Capitan clients) use a profile or script to set the CatalogURL to https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.11-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
and that seemed to work just fine.

Michael
