The French-made Smart minicar made a big splash in the U.S. auto market when it went on sale in summer 2008. Queues of hopeful buyers formed at dealers, and the media wondered whether the diminutive two-seater would replace the SUV as the second car in American garages. Pete 'n' Pam have some opinions of their own after a couple weeks driving a red Smart Fortwo Passion coupe.
Pete:Like many Americans, I saw my first Smart cars on a trip to Europe, where they seemed a perfect answer to the tight parking spaces and narrow streets. I took way too many pictures because the Smarts were so darned cute and so distinctively European.
Pam:I went gaga when I stumbled upon a huge Smart car rally in Switzerland a decade ago, too. I dreamed of zipping around Austin in one, racking up what I figured would be spectacular mileage and slipping into parking spots once only accessible if I was riding my bicycle. Sadly, that daydream has stalled.
Pam: The red and black test car-lette looked like a ladybug from the outside. Inside, it had a surprising amount of room. I bet even those extra-long legs of yours fit pretty comfortably, didn't they?
Pam: I could overlook those cheesy interior materials. What I couldn't overlook was the jerky lurch of the automatic transmission. It was like the car had to pause and gasp for breath every time it needed to shift.
Pam: I also noticed that the car continued rolling backward for a split second when I switched from reverse into drive. That's disconcerting, especially if you're on a downhill, like my driveway.
Pete: Looking under the Smart's hood, I had assumed the three-cylinder engine's modest output of 70 horsepower would be a problem, but the car moves with traffic OK except for the jerky gearshifts. But it's noisy, and the mileage isn't as good as I expected considering the car's size, just 33 city and 41 highway, and that's on premium gasoline. What?
Pete:No points either for the Smart's heavy steering at slow speeds, Pam. Turning sharply to back out of a parking space would be difficult for someone with arthritis. Steering improved as speeds increased, though. In fact, the Smart wasn't as unsteady on Interstate 35 as I expected. When I drove it to San Marcos to watch a youth baseball game, the view out the side windows was mostly 18-wheeler wheels. Nice lug nuts, Hoss.
Pam:A few more quibbles before we let this ladybird fly, Pete. It took a swift push to get the door to shut all the way. I kept trying to close it only to find I hadn't slammed hard enough. Annoying! And the braking. There's something strange about the way the brake pedal worked. It felt weird.
Pete: Interesting they call this model the Passion. It's aroused the passion in us, but not in the desired way. Several new small cars in the Smart's price bracket are more competent mechanically and fun to drive, deliver excellent mileage on regular gasoline and actually can carry a third or fourth passenger. My choice is the splendid Mazda2, but it doesn't have the Smart's Euro cachet. Late this year, Toyota begins importing its take on the stubby two-seater Smart class, the too-cute-for-words Scion iQ.
