I would like to password protect my document, but have the option to read only if you do not have the password. If I go to 'Info' and set to password protect and read only, it still makes users enter the password then opt-in to read only. I'm using Office 365 Excel. Other excel sheets in my organization can do this but I can't seem to do it on mine. Maybe their documents used another version of excel when they were created...

How would I make a vba program which enables readonly function but also needs a password to open the document up when launched and im not refering to the password I would need to edit the document if in a read only state.

I want to make one of the worksheets in an Excel 2010 workbook read-only, but I don't want to use a password. I just want to make it so that I can't accidentally edit the sheet, and I don't want to have to deal with a password--not even a blank one. In essence, I want to do the same thing as setting the read-only bit for a file, but I want to do it for an Excel 2010 worksheet.

If it's to prevent yourself from accidentally editing the sheet, one solution is to draw giant rectangle that covers all your data and set it's transparency to 100%. This will allow you to see everything but prevent you from clicking on any of the cells. However, it would still be possible to use the keyboard to navigate around and edit the cells under the shapes. This idea serves mostly as a reminder since it's easy to simply delete the shape and use the sheet normally. It's not very robust and it's annoying to apply but quick to remove.

You've already stated that protecting the sheet with a blank password is not the approach you want but it's certainly the simplest. I'm curious why you don't like it. There are a few annoyance like having to deal with a dialog box when you turn it on and dealing with a popup box whenever you try to edit a cell.

You could write some VBA to automatically protect and unprotect the sheet with a blank password. It would be easy enough to use but you'd have to put a button on your toolbar somewhere to call that macro. The popup boxes when you try to edit a cell will still occur. I.E., it doesn't save you very much time. I would recommend, though, not checking all the boxes when you protect it because doing so would allow you to add / delete rows & columns - among other things - which you probably don't want to do.

Here's the VBA to toggle sheet protection. You can use this to make a single button that turns it on and off. This article can offer all the details of how to add custom macros to the ribbon or quick-access toolbar. In brief, though: Right-click in an open space on the ribbon and click "Customize the Quick Access Toolbar" or "Customize the Ribbon" to open a new window. Set drop-down in the top left labeled "Choose commands from:" to be "Macros" and then find the macro in the list. Once you add it, you can edit the icon and name.

Password-protecting your Excel files is vital for keeping your content secure. With an effective password, you can rest assured that no one can access and view your confidential information. Here are some of the ways you can protect your important records:

Microsoft Excel is an extremely powerful and useful tool, but protecting your files is of paramount importance. Here are four essential tips to help you get started in protecting your important Excel files:

For extra protection, consider investing in a cloud backup service. This type of service not only keeps your files secure but can also be a great way to store your backups off-site. Additionally, consider setting up a two-step authentication login to ensure even better protection.

Can it be moved to a sub folder of the existing folder? If so you could put it into a subfolder then share out that subfolder so only the other employee can view the share then set the permissions on the folder/file to read only of that user.

User A is the owner of the document and not allowed to set a password to the document. It should be read only. I am worried that the document will not be able to cache anything in an office document when the document is read-only.

OK then what you would probably need to do is use deny permissions for second user on the contents root folder and read only of the root folder itself then remove inherited permissions on the specific file then grant read only permissions on that file for second user and full permissions for first user. You should then be able to create a shortcut to the file. Granted this is a very dirty way and not recommended way of doing things as really it should be in a different directory so the root directory can have specific permissions for each user as using deny permissions can be a pain.

Turns out what I had to do was make a new sub-folder then give modify access to that folder. Then turn off inheritance on the document, then move it to the newly created folder and enable read-only. The reason for this is so the auto save document will be able to be created in the folder it resides in. Thanks everyone for the help!

Securing sensitive data is crucial, and password protecting an Excel file is a common method to restrict editing while permitting read-only access. This page provides a straightforward guide on how to implement this security measure.

To password protect an Excel document with read-only permissions, open the document and press F12 to access the 'Save As' dialog. Within this dialog, locate the 'Tools' dropdown menu and select 'General Options...'. Here you can set a password to modify the file. Users without this password can still view the document in read-only mode.

Excel allows users to open a document as read-only without entering a password. This ensures that unauthorized users cannot make changes to the document. To enable this, set a password to modify in the 'General Options...' without setting a password to open.

By setting a password in the 'General Options...', you restrict editing of the Excel file. Users can view the document, but the 'OK' button in the password dialog will be disabled if they do not enter the correct password, preventing them from making changes unless they save a new copy of the workbook.

Excel, a longstanding frontrunner in spreadsheet software, meets a modern rival in Sourcetable. Sourcetable's integration with multiple data sources places it at the forefront for users seeking centralized data management.

Unlike Excel, Sourcetable's AI copilot redefines user assistance, providing an innovative chat interface that simplifies formula creation and templating, thereby enhancing productivity and user experience.

Sourcetable's spreadsheet-like interface offers a familiar environment for Excel users, yet it elevates functionality by enabling users to query an amalgamation of data, a feature particularly useful for complex data analysis.

The status bar of the Excel spreadsheet will also display the message MARKED AS FINAL highlighted in yellow. Click Edit Anyway to edit the spreadsheet and make the desired changes. You can then save the document as you normally would.

Always monitor the integrity of your files. In addition to protecting your Excel and Word files, you can also encrypt ZIP files. PDFs can be encrypted too. Just as easily as you set up a password, you can also remove a password from a PDF as well.

Excel read-only should not be confused with encrypting Excel files with a password. Encrypted Excel files offer additional password protection in order to prevent unauthorised access to files.

Complex Excel spreadsheets usually contain a lot of important data, which is linked together through cell references and formulas. By making an Excel file read-only, you can prevent unwanted changes to the data in your spreadsheet.

Adding read-only password protection to an Excel file gives you the power to determine if changes can be made to your Excel table and who (via the password) can make them. If you want to enable editing again, all you have to do is remove Excel read-only. The process for doing so is similar to removing the read-only feature for individual Excel worksheets or unlocking a Word document for editing.
